

Cornelio Abalos Barba Jr., age 90, died peacefully surrounded by his family on Saturday, February 6, 2016 at Inova Fairfax Hospital. He was born on May 18,1925 in Umingan, Pangasinan in the Philippines. He served in the Armed Forces of the Philippines and in the U.S. Army as a guerilla soldier during the Japanese occupation from 1942 to 1945. After the war, he graduated from the Mapua Institute of Technology with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering and pursued a career with the National Power Corporation in Manila. He married his wife Anna on April 1949 and together they had 12 children, one of whom died in infancy. His military service enabled him to immigrate to the United States in 1984. His entire family eventually joined him and they settled in Northern Virginia. He completed his career working in procurement for the Department of Energy and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. He was a music lover and had a beautiful tenor voice, enjoyed dancing and spending time with his large family. He was predeceased in 2015 by his younger brother Victor, and in 2013 by his oldest daughter Grace. He is survived by his beloved wife of 67 years, Anna; 10 children - Cornelio III (Consolacion), Alma (Edmund Mandac), Nonito (Arlene), Elizabeth, Mitos, Ronald (Elizabeth), Gemma (David Phelps), May Joy (Thomas Loesel), Ferdinand (Michelle), and Armando; brother Angelito (Marietta), sisters Rosario (Ruben Curameng), Liberata (Jesus Rivera), Mercedes Scroggins, Pacita Trabajo, 21 grandchildren and their spouses,12 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held on Friday, February 12, 2016, 10:30 am at St. Raymond of Penaforte Catholic Church in Springfield, VA. Burial will follow at National Memorial Park in Falls Church, VA. The family will greet friends at the National Funeral Home in Falls Church on Wednesday, February 10, from 4:30 to 8:00 pm and on Thursday, February 11, from 10 am to 8 pm.
