Ms. Dabiao Zhang passed away peacefully on May 5, 2026, at Inova Fairfax Hospital in Virginia, after unsuccessful treatment for a ruptured aortic aneurysm, at the age of 89. She is survived by her husband, Hongsen Dong; her eldest son Hanmin Dong, and daughter-in-law Jun Wen; her eldest daughter, Suxia Dong, and son-in-law Guiping Zheng; her second daughter, Suqin Dong, and son-in-law Xiangyang Zhou; her younger son, Jingxue Dong, and daughter-in-law Hongyan Wei; her grandchildren Yi Zheng (and granddaughter-in-law Yating Wang), Michael Qiao Dong (and granddaughter-in-law Andrea Goldstein), Yupeng Zhou, James Jie Dong, and Zhaoxiang Dong; and her great-granddaughter Chunyue Zheng.
Ms. Dabiao Zhang was born on June 5, 1936, in Loudi Village, Qingta Township, Renqiu City, Hebei Province, China. She was the daughter of Shen Zhang and Dafen Ren. Ms. Dabiao Zhang was raised during a turbulent period in China’s history. She lost her father when she was a little child. By the age of six, she was already spinning thread and raising chickens, and by twelve she was weaving mats and enduring hardship alongside her mother, Dafen Ren. At the age of 22 on December 6, 1958, she married Mr. Hongsen Dong from a neighboring village, and together they raised their children. They shared a devoted marriage, supporting one another and building a warm and loving family.
Because of the nature of her husband’s work in a state construction company, Ms. Zhang began a life of frequent relocations. After their marriage, her husband worked for state construction units in various parts of China. When the famine struck the village in 1959, she moved to Baotou in Inner Mongolia to reunite with her husband, where she gave birth to their eldest son, Hanmin Dong, in 1960. In 1963, she returned to her hometown in Hebei Province, where she gave birth to her eldest daughter Suxia Dong and second daughter Suqin Dong. In 1968, she moved with her three children to Hohhot, Inner Mongolia, to live with her husband again, and there she gave birth to their younger son, Jingxue Dong, in 1969. In 1970, in response to the national call to support the “Third Front Construction” initiative, her husband’s work unit relocated to Shiyan, Hubei Province, to help build facilities for the Second Automobile Manufacturing Factory. That same year, Ms. Zhang returned once more to her hometown in Loudi Village with her four children. In 1973, she moved with the children to Shiyan to reunite with her husband. There, she worked a variety of temporary jobs at construction sites to help support the family financially. In 1982, she and her husband moved with the entire family to Wuhan, Hubei Province. Ms. Zhang first worked at a breakfast cafeteria and later operated a small convenience store of her own. In 1993, she and her husband immigrated to the United States to help their eldest son Hanmin Dong and daughter-in-law Jun Wen raise their grandchildren, Michael Qiao Dong and James Jie Dong.
Ms. Zhang became a believer in Jesus Christ and was baptized in 1995 at the Fort Collins Chinese Evangelical Free Church in Colorado. In 2005, she moved with her elder son Hanmin Dong’s family to McLean, Virginia. Over the past decade, she especially enjoyed participating in activities at the AGAPE Senior Center.
Ms. Dabiao Zhang was a devoted wife, and a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Although she has departed from this world, the loving image and memories of “Grandma” will forever remain engraved in the hearts of the younger generations. Her selfless devotion and boundless love for her family and friends will continue to inspire her children and descendants for generations to come. Throughout her life, she dedicated herself wholeheartedly to supporting her husband, raising her children and grand children and managing the household with diligence and frugality. Words can scarcely capture her greatness. Her virtue and character have deeply influenced multiple generations.
