I didn't know Dan nearly as long as my dad, but over six or seven years of working with him through AAJ, he was always so incredibly kind to me. On a professional level, I will always appreciate the dedication he showed AAJ, as well as his brilliance. But his kindness is what I will always remember first and foremost. My thoughts are with your family.

Dan had it all : bright , funny , thoughtful , caring and a team player. Dan cared about AAJ and its members like we care about our clients . So sad that he is no longer with his family and with us.


I was saddened to learn of Dan's passing,but it caused me to reflect on my meeting Dan shortly after he joined the staff of AAJ in 1984. His facile mind and quick wit impressed me. Afterwards I often consulted him when faced with troublesome problems involving anti consumer legislation. Most of all I enjoyed just spending time with him sharing Chicago stories and as a fellow Cub fan trying to predict when and if they would ever win another World Series since last winning in 1908. Dan was my brother in law, mainly because I introduced him to my sister Maxine. When I first knew him he was a fantastic athlete, a swimmer and a tennis player. He was also the manager of the House Judiciary Committee Coed Softball Team. Since then we have shared many family events, happy and sad. This is by far the saddest. Greg and I will miss Dan.

In my years of board meetings and conventions of our beloved ssociation, Dan was a constant above the fray, always a quick smile and friendly greeting, always in-the-know on multiple levels, and always able to put the next crisis into perspective. Sanity without cynicism was always as close as Dan's next glib comment.  I'll miss him.

Dan filled every summer weekend with joy talking politics, Chicago sports and just life at Vienna Woods. Then we lost touch for 10 years until the High Holidays when we reconnected at High Holidays at TRS. The world lost a real mensch, a caring, loving soul. Dan Cohen and I were close friends for more than three decades, beginning in the 1980s when he was an integral part of the work of the ATLA Keyperson Committee, on which I served for more than a quarter century. Dan was a lovable and a loving human being.  He loved his God, his family, his country, his friends, and his profession.  Our working relationship blossomed into a close and enduring friendship which I shall always cherish.  I'm thankful that we had a cheerful and very upbeat telephone conversation last Tuesday, 9-29-2015.  During that call Dan exuded optimism and joy.  He was a dear and loyal friend whom I shall sorely miss.

My thoughts and prayers are with the Cohen family as you deal with this loss.  Dan was a true gentleman and scholar.  His sage advice and counsel was often sought by those of us in the state associations.  His kind demeanor, unfailingly good advice and patience were exemplary and appreciated by all who knew him.  I am proud to have been his friend and colleague.

In my years of involvement in the leadership of then ATLA , there were many times bills would appear that were complex and difficult to understand. Dan had a brilliant mind that could take the most complicated issues and simplify them for the rest of us who were strugling to understand. He always did it in a way that made you engaged and positive about yourself. I can't count the times when I would go to him and ask him to explain things to me . He always did it with a smile. In a world where battles were fought each day and we were blessed to have many victories , he never sought credit . He always complimented others on their success without seeking the limelight for himself. When I think of Dan , I smile. I think he always tried to make others feel good about themselves. He was a gifted individual . I felt lucky to have known him and been able to work with him. I think for everyone who had a chance to be in the trenches with him , he was a gift. I was very saddened to hear of his passing. I am very appreciative that I had the opportunity of knowing and working with him.

Andrea and I knew Dan for so many years through ATLA and will always remember him as a wonderful, loyal, extremely thorough friend and attorney. Always there was a smile and probably a funny story to be told. His goal was always to protect ATLA, 
AAJ, and it's president. He did his job extremely well! Calm, cool, and a  great guy. We will miss him.

Dan was an extraordinary lawyer and a wonderful human being whose contribution to AAJ will create a lasting legacy to his memory.  Hard to imagine AAJ without Dan and we will miss him.

I had the privilege of working with and getting to know Dan for many years.  I am truly sorry for his passing.  He will leave a wonderful and positive impact on my life and the life of so many others for years to come.  My deepest condolences to his family.

I am so saddened to hear of Dan's passing.  He was a great friend of everyone at AAJ/ATLA and one who brightened every room he was in.  We will miss him.  He was one of a kind.

Dan was simply the best.  I am heartbroken to hear of his passing.  He was always gracious and kind to me and was invaluable to those of us who served as President during his tenure. I can honestly say there were times that I made it through a crisis only because of his sage advice.  I will miss his smile and his intellect but most of all his friendship.

It is never easy to lose a loved one, I pray you find comfort in Gods promise found at John 6:40 which says that soon we will see all our loved ones again. My deepest condolences to the family.

I'm proud to say that I became a friend to Dan during the many years that I served on the ATLA/AAJ Board of Governors.  He was a real class act and a brilliant lawyer.  He will be missed more than we now know.  My heart-felt condolences to Maxine and his daughter.

My heart breaks. Dan was incomparable, magnificent, brilliant, steadfast, caring, thoughtful, vigilant - and always so modest. He looked out for us and we were so grateful for that. We were proud to call him our friend. We will miss him terribly.

I didn't know Dan as long as many others did, having been on the AAJ Board of Governors for only 6 years, but my first two elections were contested, and I met Dan quickly, because he was the only one who knew the rules well enough to explain and understand them.   I was impressed by his knowledge and humor, and enjoyed every opportunity I had to talk to him at Board meetings and receptions.   I know the last few years have been tough, but I'm glad his life is being celebrated for its greatness in the law, and more importantly, as a human being.  My prayers and thoughts are with Dan's family.  Good bless.

I am in tears and my heart is so heavy knowing that the world has lost such a compassionate and carrying soul.  We were all better for having had the opportunity to know Dan.  I know he now rests in peace.

Dan was one of those people you would cross the street to see anytime the opportunity presented. You just wanted to see him. He was smart and thoughtful - a great combination. We missed him when he left AAJ and will miss him always.

Dear Maxine and Children:  I met you last summer in Baltimore.  Danny told me he was retiring, and I told him that was my intent also.  We always had a common bond.  Telling off color jokes, telling Yiddish jokes, sharing our views on various legislative matters and planning strategy deep into the night over cold pizza on the 5th floor of the old building on 31st street, in the "war room".  He was a gentleman, he was a scholar, he was a great husband and father who loved his wife and kids; he was an All-Star.  The world has lost a great guy, and we have lost a wonderful friend.  I will miss him.

I am better having worked with Dan through AAJ.  Dan was such the gentle giant when it came to issues.  No matter what the discussion, Dan always let his true heart and mind shine through when it was needed most.  He wasn't brash, he wasn't aggressive.  He was a gentleman through and through.  He was truly someone who said what he meant, and he was right. He had a deep understanding of what mattered, and why. He was so good to everyone around him at AAJ.  My time with him working on Elections issues was wonderful.  He was so dedicated to his work, for so many years.  A true testament to all that makes a good lawyer a good person.  I will miss him greatly, and think of him often.  I offer my heartfelt support during this difficult time.  Thank you for sharing Dan with us all.  He made us, and AAJ, better for it.

So sorry to hear of Dan's death. He was as good as it gets. I knew Dan for decades through ATLA, AAJ. He will be missed.

Dan Cohen was a GENTLEMAN in every sense of the word. During my years on the AAJ Budget Committee he kept us straight and was always available.  We are all going to miss this great and good man.  My deepest sympathy to his wife and daughter and to the AAJ staff.

So smart, so funny, so many happy memories.

So sorry to hear the news.  Dan and I were good friends at law school, but largely lost touch with each other, something I always regretted.  I always admired his humor, photographic memory recall of all Oscar winners, Opera, and scarily language from law cases.  We played touch football together, and I will never forget when he came back for third year and announced he was no longer going both ways.  He was a devoted Cubs fans, and as I recall could not get radio casts, so went to the extreme of listening to a Montreal station we could get in French to get the occasional Cubs score on the Expos games.

A great guy, he will be missed by me and many others of his classmates!
