Daniel W. Gichner

Native Washingtonian, passed away October 24, 2014 at Casey House Hospice. Dan was the beloved husband of Sonia (Sonny Abelson); brother of Marjorie Wollberg and the late Josephine Gimble; father of Sara "Sally" (James Dessenger) Gichner, Lisa (Haruhiko Itagaki) Gichner and Barbara (Dana) Holmes; grandfather of Sarai (Michael) Meyer, Leah Itagaki, Eli Holmes, and Eden Holmes. Dan graduated Woodrow Wilson High School, where he was an officer in the Cadets. He earned a B.S.M.E. at Lafayette College in 1952 and was a long-time member of the Lafayette College Marquis Society. After serving in the U.S. Navy, Dan worked as a mechanical engineer with his father (Jacob Gichner) at "Gichner" for many years, and owned the business until retiring. Dan was a member of Kiwanas for 10 years. Over the last 30 years, Dan and Sonny traveled extensively. He painted landscapes and people they visited. Ushering at local theatres, Strathmore Center for the Arts, and volunteering at the Washington Animal Rescue League (W.A.R.L.) were other retirement interests. Services will be held at King David Memorial Gardens on Sunday, October 26, 2014 at 1 p.m. The Gichners will be receiving family and friends at the residence following the service. In lieu of flowers, please make memorial contributions to Lafayette College or W.A.R.L.
