Dawn Lee (Southard) Kelley of Falls Church, VA passed away peacefully on November 10, 2025.
Dawn was born to the late Roland Southard and Eleanor Noto on December 12, 1943, in Somerville, New Jersey. She grew up in a close-knit community where she built life-long friendships and started her family. In 1993, Dawn and her family relocated to Virginia. During this time, she lovingly raised her sons. For many winters, Dawn resided in Saint Augustine, Florida, savoring the beach and warmer weather.
With a degree in elementary education from Kent State University, she devoted almost two decades to teaching in New Jersey and Virginia. She found great joy in watching children learn and grow and often reminisced about her former students.
Dawn was renowned for her storytelling and sharp wit, which brought her remarkable memory to life. She always found a way to weave family stories into everyday conversation, captivating any audience. She loved playing Mahjong, exercising, traveling, the arts and staying engaged in politics. Giving back was important to Dawn. She often volunteered her time at historical and cultural organizations. Above all, she thrived in the company of others, especially her family and friends. She will be fondly remembered for her kindness, positivity, profound love of country, and spending time with her grandchildren.
Dawn is survived by her two children, Doug (Lynn) of Arlington, VA and Gregory of Springfield, VA and five grandchildren Clara, Nora, Evelyn, Grant and Colin. Dawn is also survived by her brother, LtCol, USMC Ret. Clayton Noto (Brenda) of Lexington, VA and sister Vicki Debree (Robert) of Palm Coast, FL, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents.
A small, private celebration of life will be held at a future date for close family and friends. Details will be shared once arrangements are finalized. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to The American Heart Association.
