
Doris Eichlin Tiller, age 96, of Falls Church, VA, died April 17 at her home in Falls Church. The cause was complications from dementia said her son, de Teel Tiller. A lifelong Washington, DC resident, Doris Ebert Eichlin was born April 17, 1918, in Easton, PA. She was the daughter of University of Maryland Physics Professor Charles G. Eichlin and Jessie Lenore Ebert Eichlin. The family moved shortly after her birth to Washington, DC where a sister Jane and later a brother Charles were born. She attended Washington, DC public schools graduating from Theodore Roosevelt High School in 1935. She was active in Girl Scouts and an avid tennis player.
Doris graduated from the University of Maryland, College of Education in 1939. She was a member of the Tri Delta sorority. She taught English at Bethesda High School and Leland Junior High School in Gaithersburg. She married Washington, DC native DeTeel Patterson Tiller in November, 1942. In 1952, Doris, Teel, and a new son Pat moved to Falls Church, VA, where Tiller was co-owner of Porter Studios – a Falls Church photo and camera store. In 1954 their second child Jane Patterson Tiller was born. Doris’ husband of 17 years died in 1958.
Doris returned to teaching in 1960, joining the faculty at the newly-opened Henry Wadsworth Longfellow Intermediate School in McLean, VA where she taught English and History. She retired in 1985 and spent many years volunteering as a member of the Auxiliary of Fairfax Hospital.
Survivors include her two children: son de Teel Patterson Tiller and Jane Tiller Mendenhall, her brother Charles G. Eichlin of New York City, and two grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, April 24 at Resurrection Lutheran Church, 6201 Washington Boulevard, Arlington, VA. Burial will be private.
