

Philanthropist
Dorothy Shapiro, died peacefully Wednesday evening, May 29, 2012, after a short illness, at Manor Care Nursing Home in Potomac, MD. Dorothy Yetta Marcus was born in Portland, Oregon December 6, 1921. She was preceded in death by her dearly beloved spouse, Maurice Shapiro. The Shapiros were known throughout the Washington area for their generous philanthropy to many important organizations. Their kindness extended to Suburban Hospital, The George Washington University, the Holocaust Museum, Strathmore Hall, the Hospital for Sick Children, the Montgomery County Humane Society, and many other important organizations dedicated to the rescue and love of animals. Mrs. Shapiro was the founder of the Aspen Hill Pet Cemetery, which she recently donated to the Montgomery County Humane Society. She and Maurice were the recipients of numerous awards honoring their commitment to scholarship, health, heritage, and humanity to all creatures. Dottie was a lovely kind, politically active and caring woman. She was very loyal to her many friends and animals. She loved to watch the deer feed in her garden surrounded by her beloved cats and her much loved dog, Blue. The service will take place Friday, June 1 at 10 a.m. at Danzansky Goldberg Memorial Chapels, 1170 Rockville Pike, Rockville, Maryland 20852, followed by interment at King David Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations to the Montgomery County Humane Society will be greatly appreciated.
