Dorrie was born in Pila, Laguna, Philippines to Maximo and Illuminada Mistica on January 1, 1951. After graduating from Arellano University in 1973, she began her decades-long career as a registered nurse. In 1975, she immigrated to the United States when she was recruited to work at Tift General Hospital in Georgia. After a year, she moved to Virginia to be closer to her nursing school friend, Erlinda. She married Reno, Erlinda’s brother, in 1977, with whom she raised two daughters, Gina and Rachel.
Dorrie’s passion for caring for others and her discipline bolstered her nursing career at Jefferson Memorial Hospital and Inova Fairfax Hospital, where she worked on the open heart and lung transplant surgery floor and lastly in the Interventional Radiology Recovery unit. After serving a total of 43 years as a registered nurse, Dorrie retired in 2016.
Dorrie was a devout Catholic and an active parishioner at St. Timothy Catholic Church, where she regularly attended Eucharistic Adoration and formed a special bond with Rev. Sean Nypaver. Dorrie found peace worshipping at Catholic churches during her travels, the highlight of which was a pilgrimage to the Holy Land in 2022. During that trip, Dorrie and Reno renewed their wedding vows at the Wedding Church of Cana.
She played a large role in the upbringing of her four grandkids, who lovingly called her Nanay. Having grown up poor, Dorrie understood the importance of a strong work ethic and a good education, which she instilled in each of her grandkids. She and Reno also loved taking them to Massanutten Resort every summer and was also a regular fan at their games and performances.
Dorrie is survived by her loving husband, Reno; daughters, Gina (husband Chris) and Rachel (husband Jason); grandchildren, Joshua, Brady, Blake, and Mila; siblings, Reynaldo, Rochelle, and Roel; sister-in-law, Erlinda (husband Loy); niece, Michelle (husband Mike); grand-niece, Michaela; and grand-nephew, Mason.
The family of Dorrie wishes to extend our sincere thanks and heartfelt gratitude to Rev. Sean Nypaver (St. Timothy Catholic Church), Dr. Daniel Chong (Virginia Cancer Specialists), Dr. Alexander Spira (Next Oncology), Dr. Sunita Venkatachallam (Inova Family Medicine), Dr. Osman Malik and Arielle Holliday (Inova Pulmonology), Dr. Alexander Bagasra (Infectious Disease Consultants), Fair Oaks Hospital and Fairfax Hospital staff, and VITAS Healthcare.
