

Dwayne (Andy) Stephan Anderson, CDR (Reserve), 92, CIA, DIA, and OSD passed peacefully on November 19, 2019. He was born In 1927 in Branch, Michigan to Carl and Elsie Anderson. Dwayne attended Michigan State for his undergrad degree in Political Science and University of Wisconsin for post graduate study. He joined the Coast Guard in 1945 and again for the Korean War as Port Security Commander. He then worked with the CIA doing Estimates and Current Intelligence where he was involved with the Taiwan Straits Crisis of 1958 doing Intelligence assessments. Dwayne was a Soviet Naval expert analyst as well as a military analyst for the CIA. He then moved to Office of the Secretary of Defense as a Foreign Affairs Specialist. He helped write the Space Treaty banning nuclear weapons in space. He received numerous awards, including the Defense Meritorious Service Medal (DSM), Bronze Palm to the DSM, and AFIO’s David Atlee Phillips award.
After retiring in 1986, he co-founded AFIO (Association of Former Intelligence Officers) and edited quarterly publications of the newsletter (which later became The Intelligencer). He wrote quarterly articles for the Intelligencer titled “Of This or That” until his final issue in Winter 2014-2015. He was a frequent contributor to journals, including having two articles published in CIA’s Studies in Intelligence, numerous columns in AFIO’s Intelligencer, six articles on railroad history, and columns in The American Weekly and other newspapers. He co-edited seven books on military history, he did drafting on several international treaties on outer space, chemical and biological weapons, and laws of war.
He was preceded in death by his wife Elizabeth (Betsy) , his parents – Carl and Elsie Anderson , his sisters, Fern Nassal and Carla Travoli (Warren Travoli) and brother Jim Anderson (Wanda Mandeville ).He is survived by his sons, Mark (Lorinda), and, Ian (Caroline), and daughter, Loren Anderson.
