

ELSIE CORNELIA JOHNSON, born August 17, 1915 in Falls Church, VA, died on March 25, 2013 at the age of ninety-seven (97). Elsie was the daughter of the late Cora and William Pinkett. Elsie spent her early years working for Lamar and Genevieve Newcomb, the founders of WFAX 1220 AM radio station and spent many nights working at the station once it began broadcasting in 1948. Later in life, Elsie worked for the Fairfax County School Board and retired after more than 20 years of dedicated service.
Elsie was preceded in death by her parents Cora and William Pinkett; husband Willie Morris Johnson, and her children Rose and Theodore R. Johnson. She is survived by her children Willie Johnson Jr. of Clayton, NC; Gladys M. Wood of Columbia, SC; Virginia D. Byrd of Fairfax, VA; and Lucille (Wilbert) Sowell of Clayton, NC. Surviving siblings include Cynthia Williams of Philadelphia, PA and Mary Bradford of Virginia Beach, VA. Grandchildren include: Loretta (George) Cross, Joellyn Williams, Cathy Wood, Belinda Wood, Wilbert (Roxanne) Sowell Jr., Amanda Sowell, Reginald (Angela) Wood Jr., and Camilla (Phillip) White. Elsie is also survived by a host of great grandchildren, great great grandchildren, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
Elsie enjoyed traveling, spending time with family, listening to music and relaxing. Elsie touched many lives and always entered a room with a great big smile; she was never a stranger to lending a helpful hand or providing insightful advice. Elise loved everyone she came in contact with but most of all she loved the Lord! She was deeply loved and will be missed.
