Ethel was born on November 13, 1923 to Edward F. Daley and Ethel F. Daley in New York City, New York. Ethel grew up in Long Island City, Queens with her parents and elder sister, Helen. She remembered her childhood fondly and spoke often of her tight-knit family, especially her dear uncles.
Ethel met her husband, George J. Cooney, in grade school when they were 10 years old. They frequently attended dances together and eventually fell in love. Ethel and George wed in 1944 going on to have 1 child, Michael J. Cooney.
Ethel dedicated her life to being a wonderful, caring wife and mother. She was a devoted military spouse and traveled the world supporting George, who went on to become a decorated officer in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Ethel excelled at propping up her friends and family, and supporting them through the many passions and difficulties of their lives. When she wasn’t filling her home with warmth and kindness, Ethel enjoyed taking long walks, working in her garden, and dining out with friends and neighbors.
Ethel was predeceased by her mother, Ethel F. Daley; her father, George F. Daley; and her sister, Helen Freeman; and her husband, George J. Cooney. She is survived by her son, Michael J. Cooney and her cousin, Carol A. Palandrani. We will miss her warmth, poise, generosity, and kindness greatly.
Service will be held at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery.
