Gary Wayne Androphy, MD JD of Sarasota, Florida, passed away on April 28 at the age of 72 after a brief battle with pancreatic cancer. He was born in Waterbury, Connecticut to Leonard Androphy, owner of Androphy’s Furniture and Appliances and Asnah Androphy, a homemaker.
Dr. Androphy received his B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Brown University, his M.D. from the University of Connecticut, and completed orthopedic surgery training at the Medical College of Virginia. He practiced for many years in Derby, Connecticut.
After an early retirement from medicine, he moved to Chicago with his beloved wife Karen (Volkman) where he received his J.D. from the Northwestern University School of Law. In 2017, they relocated to Sarasota, becoming active and beloved members of Temple Emanu-EL where they forged strong ties with the rabbis and supportive, caring friends.
Dr. Androphy was self-motivated, curious, well-read and was also enthusiastic about theater and film. He generously shared his research, opinions, creativity, and passions with friends and family, especially his nieces and nephews.
As a skilled surgeon and engineer, he developed the tools for triplanar knee replacements, which to this day provides more mobility and less pain to patients. He took great pride in this achievement.
Growing up, he used his father’s video camera, but later became a passionate travel photographer. He and Karen would bring their cameras on photo safaris throughout the United States and all over the world. “Photos nobody else takes” was his main interest. His collection included alpine photography, white water rafting and the exploration of multi-imaging and emotive monochrome photography. His deep interest in art and travel led to the creation of a world-class collection of vintage travel posters, historic memorabilia and old Florida postcards. He also had a love of fountain pens and gifted many from his outstanding collection to friends and family.
He was kind to all who knew him and was always willing to share his special knowledge on subjects both general and arcane. A computer whiz whose expertise served all.
Dr. Androphy is survived by his cherished wife Karen, and his brothers Joel Androphy (Sheryl) and Jay Androphy (Robin). He also leaves behind 6 nieces and nephews: Daniel Androphy, Robyn Campbell, Jeremy Volkman, Justine Senta, Dawn Androphy and David Androphy, along with countless loving family members and friends.
He will be missed.
Charitable donations in memory of Dr. Gary Androphy may be made to All Faiths Food Bank.
