Dear Bác,
Having known Bác for almost a decade but without knowing your name at 7:30/8:00 AM Sunday’s mass at Christ the Redeemer.  Those warm smiles and waves weekly of yours as we leave the church parking lot are unforgettable.  Haven’t seen Bác recently at church two consecutive weeks made us worried .  It’s regretful con và các cháu haven’t had a final THANK-YOU to Bác/Ông as a way of saying ‘Goodbye’.  One big thing for sure is that we will miss those tasty ‘Bánh Tét & Dưa Món’ you made as Tết festival arrives.  May God protect you always.

Dear Tammy and Family, 

Please accept my deepest condolences on the loss of your Father and Loved One,  Hoc Ngoc Nguyen.  I read the memories shared by you and could feel the love that you had for your father. I know that he will be missed, but his memory lives on forever in each and everyone he met.  Please lean on family and friends to help you through this difficult time. I would like to express my condolences to the family and to my dear co-worker, Tammy, for the loss of Hoc Ngoc. I am sorry not to have known him because he sounds very much like a person I would have liked very much. I can see that he will be so missed by you all and my heart hurts for your loss. At the same time, it makes me glad that you have those happy times and memories to keep with you all. My thoughts and prayers are with you Tammy & extend to your family.

To our dearest and oldest brother in law, Anh Hoc, we will miss you.  Not so long ago during our family gatherings we complimented you as to how you had such a glow on your face and your cheeks were blushing.  In part we know you were blushing because you've always been shy, but the image of your genuine smile will always be remembered.  Although we don't communicate much (more so because of your strong Hue accent and your shy spoken voice and/or because of our lack of understanding Vietnamese) we always enjoyed your hospitality and your amazing cooking!! I grew to love Bun Bo Hue because of your cooking.  
Because of our age gap and we all grew up in different generation and society it is hard to relate with one another, however we know the relationship you have with Ma for over 60 years is by far closer than anyone in the family.  Ma tells us many stories of our family's journeys and Ma understands your hardship, challenges and love for your family, wife, and children.  Thank you for always being there for Ma, providing the love you have for us and Ma with your cooking. 
 Tui em Thank You Anh for being a big brother to us.  You will always be in our hearts, thoughts and prayers.  We know that you will serve God well in heaven and will look over us.  Please tell Tia and our brothers and sisters "Hi" and we miss them dearly.  We will meet again one day, Anh Hoc.

My Father, Hoc Ngoc Nguyen, was a very shy man.  A man of few words, but a man I know for sure with a big heart.  He thought of others before himself.  A hardworking man all his life.  The ways he’s shown us that he loved us and cared for us was through his cooking and actions.  He knew what each one of us liked, and cooked our favorite dishes.  He would go grocery shopping the day before.  On the day of cooking, he woke up really early before sunrise.  What made him happy was family gatherings and to see us all enjoyed his home cooked meals.  He did that on every holiday and my mother’s birthdays.  

My Father retired right at the time of the Covid pandemic.  We were so happy for him, but he wanted to back to work.  I didn’t know my father was very ill.  He thought he was sick with the flu for about 2 weeks, and he didn’t want to bother any of his children.  My Father was blessed not to get Covid, but unfortunately he was taken by an exacerbation of a chronic condition.

My grandparents, aunts, uncles, and family went to the National Shrine Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes in Emmitsburg, MD with my Father at one time or another.  It was fun and most memorable experience.  My Father liked watching:  soccer, boxing, tennis, football, the Olympics and travel channels on Youtube.  He used to keep up with the news, but not so much these days.

We’re going to miss my Father’s cooking.  Most of all, we’re going to miss my Father, his company, his smile, his laughter and his jokes.  It will never be the same without my Father.

Thank you Ba (Father/Dad) for everything.  We love you and you will forever be in our hearts.
