Irma Basye Peil, the daughter of Walter and Georgianna Basye, died peacefully on March 22, 2022 surrounded by friends and family and in the caring hands of Huntsville Hospital Inpatient Hospice Care. Irma was born on November 19, 1943 and passed into heaven at the age of 78 where she was joyfully greeted by family and friends that went before her. Irma is survived by three children Patricia (Pat) McAuliffe and husband Robert, William (Bill) Peil, and Robyn Elliott; three grandchildren Cortney and husband Richard, Kory and wife Chelsea, and Zach; one great grandson Hunter; and one great grandson soon to be born into the world Koda. She also left behind the man she affectionately called “the love of her life” Mike Peil. She is also survived by her brother Gary Basye Sr. Irma’s father and mother Walter and Georgianna Basye and her brother and sister Walter Jr and Mollie Basye preceded her in death.
Irma lived in her beloved Stafford County, Virginia home since 1969 where she loved cutting the grass, watching her precious birds, having lunch and going for rides with her best friend and having her children as next door neighbors. She was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s at the age of 69 and was lovingly cared for in her home by her granddaughter, Cortney, for a number of years before moving to Huntsville, Alabama to live with her eldest daughter and favorite son-in-law. She worked for Stafford County Public Schools as a paraprofessional working with special needs children and as a bus driver before advancing to special needs route coordinator with the Stafford County Transportation Department and eventually retiring in 2010.
The woman we knew affectionately as Mom, Grandma (Gma), and Friend will be dearly missed, but is now at peace and has been added to the ranks of all the angels in heaven. The family will hold a graveside service at National Memorial Park, 7428 Lee Hwy, Falls Church, Virginia on Saturday, April 16th at 12:00 (noon), cemetery section DD, plot 146. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association at https://act.alz.org/site/Donation2?df_id=39209&mfc_pref=T&39209.donation=form1 to assist in the advancement of research toward a cure.
