

James Edward Thomson, 75, of Arlington Virginia passed at home on November 12, 2023. James was born on January 10, 1948, in Washington DC to his parents Elwood Thomson and Lenore Goltry Thomson who have preceded him in death. His two brothers Paul Eugene Thomson and Larry Elwood Thomson also preceded him in death.
He is survived by his nephews William David Thomson of Springfield Virginia, Richard Daniel Thomson and his wife Nicole Ann Thomson of Land O’ Lakes, Florida, John Douglas Thomson and his wife Brenda Joy Mills of West Palm Beach, Florida, Clay Elwood Thomson and his wife Emmy Kenan Thomson of Charlottesville, Virginia, Neil Davis Thomson and his wife Jacqueline Tyler Thomson of Isle of Palms, South Carolina, and Weatherford Braden Thomson and his wife Amanda Bellanca Thomson of Hunsdorf, Luxembourg.
James attended Washington-Lee High School, class of 1966, earned a Bachelor of Science from the University of Virginia in 1970 and was conferred his PhD of Mathematics from University of North Carolina in 1974. James began at Virginia Tech in 1974 as a professor of Mathematics from which he retired as Professor Emeritus of Mathematics after thirty years. He was an author, thesis advisor, and prominent researcher. James authored over 30 papers and his work has been cited over 200 times in multiple publications. As early as high school he was selected and participated in an NSF-sponsored mathematics program for high-school students conducted at Virginia Tech. He loved mathematics and inspired others with his passion.
He will be remembered by his family and friends as a gentle, kind, and good-hearted person with a wonderful sense of humor. James will be interred in a private family ceremony at National Memorial Cemetery Falls Church Virginia.
