Joan Lucille Wise

On Sunday, February 24, 2019, Joan Wise passed away at the age of 92. She was preceded in death by her parents Isaac and Verne Booth, sister Jeanette Query Sacket, brother Robert Booth and loving husband Paul Wise. She is survived by her son Craig Wise, daughter Cathy Wise, son Chris Wise (Sandi), grandchildren Raymond and Rachel Wise, niece Judy Miller McDougall, nephew Brad Booth and several other nieces and nephews. Joan was born on April 17, 1926 in Vinton, Iowa. She and the family moved to Ashland, Ohio in 1928. Joan attended Ashland High School where she was a member of the orchestra and played on both the basketball and volleyball teams. She graduated in 1944 and moved to Columbus, Ohio where she attended business school. After graduating she moved back to Ashland and worked as a secretary at Hess & Clark. On September 20, 1947 she married Paul Wise and they had 3 children. In 1962 the family moved to Falls Church, Virginia. Joan worked for the federal government for 26 years at the Federal Trade Commission and later at the Interstate Commerce Commission. After retiring in 1988 she volunteered at the Inova Fairfax Hospital gift shop and also at the McLean Treasure Trove. She was active in her church singing in the choir, president of the women’s society and instrumental in establishing the Food for Others project. She loved dancing, playing bridge and spending time with her friends. She was most happy when she was spending time in her yard gardening or just sitting in the swing reading and bird watching. She loved her dogs and grand dogs as much as they loved her. A visitation for Joan will be held Saturday, April 6, 2019 from 9:30 AM to 11:00 AM at Murphy Funeral Homes, 1102 West Broad Street, Falls Church, VA 22046, followed by a funeral service from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM. A reception will immediately follow the service. A private burial will take place at Oakwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers a donation may be made in her memory to St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, 7628 Leesburg Pike, Falls Church, VA 22043.
