After a lengthy illness, Dr. JoAnn Strickland, 75, formerly of Bunnlevel, NC, and later Annandale, Virginia and Davenport, FL, died August 22 at her home in Raleigh, NC.
Dr. Strickland was born in Harnett County to Joseph Patrick Strickland and Irene Strickland. She was educated at East Carolina University with a B.S. in education, Masters at William and Mary University in Virginia, and Doctorate at Peabody College of Education and Human Development at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN. She spent her entire professional career in Fairfax County, Virginia, working in the education field; teaching Mathematics at Falls Church HS, Annandale, HS, Stuart HS, and as county Mathematics Specialist and Personnel Specialist.
Dr. Strickland was a member of the Delta kappa Gamma Society International, an organization promoting professional and personal growth of women educators and excellence in education. She served several terms as Treasurer.
Dr. Strickland was a member of Ravensworth Baptist Church in Annandale, and attended New Hope Baptist Church in Raleigh.
She enjoyed traveling the world with family and friends and had toured all 7 continents.
She is survived by her sister, Gail Hannon and husband, John Patrick Hannon. Also, three loving nephews, Jerry Blanchard, Jr., and wife Missy, Brantley Blanchard and wife Carol, and Patrick Horton. Also surviving are 3 great-nephews, and 1 great-niece.

A memorial service celebrating her life will be held at New Hope Baptist Church in Raleigh, on Wednesday, the 27th at New Hope Baptist Church at 7:00 PM with a visitation one hour prior, other times at the home of her sister.
A graveside service will be held at National Memorial Park in Falls Church, VA, 7482 Lee Highway, on Friday August 29th at 3:00 p.m.
In Lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Parkinson's Foundation.
