A lifelong resident of McLean, John was born September 11, 1960, to the late Dr. John Edward and Patricia Mortell Ryan. He attended St. John’s Elementary School and Bishop O’Connell High School, then graduated from Fairfield University and the University of Georgia School of Law.
John began his career as a founding partner of the law firm Ryan & Coppola. He would later determine that his clients would benefit from integrating estate planning with more financial services and so helped found an independent financial advisory firm, Dominion Wealth Management.
John earned numerous credentials and certifications over his career: he was a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA), a Certified Public Accountant (CPA), a Certified Financial Planner (CFP), and he earned a Master of Laws in Taxation. He was privileged to be one of only a small number of individuals nationwide to hold this combination of degrees and designations.
John was a man of strong character, deep faith, intellectual curiosity, wry humor, and unlimited compassion. An enthusiastic traveler, hiker, biker, golfer, and pilot, he also loved reading, Notre Dame football, the Commanders, the Orioles and Nationals, and driving and racing sports cars.
John was predeceased by his sister Anne Ryan McConnell and his niece Polly McConnell. He is survived by five sisters: Kathy Kiernan (Peter), Mary Cunningham (Kevin), Tricia O’Connor (Ted), Nancy O’Connor (Clint), and Megan Ryan; a brother-in-law Steve McConnell; 18 nieces and nephews; and 17 great nieces and nephews.
A Mass celebrating John’s life will be held at the Sacred Heart of Mary Chapel at Marymount University, 2807 N. Glebe Road, Arlington, VA, on Saturday, May 3 at Noon.
John’s family extends its deepest gratitude to Dr. Leonard Saltz at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City and to John’s Goodwin Hospice team.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to The Children’s Inn at NIH which aids children with serious illnesses, for whom John had great empathy. Donations can be made online or mailed to The Children’s Inn at NIH, 7 West Drive, Bethesda, MD 20814.
