Born on March 25, 2004, Joyce was the treasured youngest daughter of Zhong Qi and Ping Yun, and the cherished sister of Grace Qi. She graduated from McLean High School in McLean, Virginia in 2022, where she developed a love for coding and gained recognition as a National Merit Scholarship finalist. Outside of school, she was an avid cross-country athlete and could be found running through the rolling hills of McLean with her teammates daily. She loved cooking and baking, always whipping up apple pie for Thanksgiving and Bûches de Noël for Christmas. She was beloved in the community and a true animal lover.
These passions and interests led Joyce to attend the University of Chicago in 2022. She was brilliant, double majoring in Economics and Data Science and handling her coursework with ease. She served as a TA in the Data Science department for multiple quarters. Against the backdrop of Chicago, Joyce truly flourished in all parts of life, whether she was running along the lake in Hyde Park, trying new restaurants all over the city, studying in cafes in West Loop, shopping in Lincoln Park, or spending time with friends on campus. She loved to travel, spending breaks from school eagerly experiencing the world and all it had to offer. Most importantly, she found her best friends and built a life that she loved. She was ecstatic to continue her adventures in law school at UCLA in the fall of 2026. We could not have been more proud of the young woman she grew up to be.
Joyce lived life so fully. She was a spitfire, a force to be reckoned with, and someone who was always chasing bigger and better things. She was never afraid of who she was, her strong will driving her natural confidence and self-assuredness. She was magnetic - her personality overflowed from her body and brightened any room she entered. She was ridiculously funny and had a larger-than-life presence. She was headstrong yet simultaneously deeply caring and fiercely loyal to her family and those she loved. There are some people who are simply visitors to the world, but she was not one of them. She made our lives bigger, and for that, we will carry a piece of her in our hearts forever. Though her 21 years were far too short, we take comfort in knowing that she is now embraced in God’s eternal comfort. We are forever grateful for the precious gift of Joyce, our Angel of Joy, and all that she is and all that she stood for. We look forward to the day we will reunite with her in our Heavenly home.
Friends, classmates, and all who loved Joyce are warmly invited to join us in honoring her life and legacy.
