
Juanita Barker Mays, age 94, formerly of Fall Church, Virginia passed away peacefully on October 6, 2022 in Winchester, Virginia. Juanita was born in Danville Virginia to Jacob Bryant Mays and Elizabeth Barker Mays on November 9, 1927. She was raised and went to school in Danville, Virginia.
She moved to Norfolk to live with her dear sister Billie and started her career with C & P Telephone Company in 1945, which continued until her retirement from Verizon in 1983. She was a long distance telephone operator.
Juanita moved to Falls Church, Va. in the early 50’s to be near her mother and stepfather. She grew deep roots in the community, attending Westover Baptist Church and had wonderful friendships with her neighbors.
Juanita was preceded in death by her father Jacob Bryant Mays, her mother Elizabeth Barker Cooper, her sister Billie Langston Mays and her loving and adoring stepfather George Franklin Cooper, WWII veteran. Juanita dearly loved her cat named Calico, who lived for 19 years.
Juanita is survived by a beloved cousin Glynn Powell and her family, loving neighbors Dorothy Weakley, Landes family, Wymer family and Erbe family.
Juanita moved to Westminster Canterbury in Winchester in 2015 and enjoyed her new life surrounded by new friends, friendly faces,and helpful staff. Juanita is also survived by devoted friends John and Jane Tesh.
Memorials may be given to any organization of your choice, especially those that help animals in need.
