August 1, 1968 – June 27, 2026
Kathy was born August 1, 1968 in Darlinghurst (Sydney), Australia and raised in nearby Wollongong. She passed peacefully in her sleep on June 27, 2026, after a courageous five-year battle with cancer.
Kathy moved to California in 1989 as a nanny. There she met and married Patrick Kane in 1992. They raised their children in Oxnard before moving to Arlington, Virginia in 2007.
As an early childhood teacher, “Ms Kathy” helped mold countless children and built lasting relationships throughout her 30 years at First Baptist Day School, Kinhaven Preschool, Arlington Unitarian Cooperative Preschool, and Central United Methodist Church. She volunteered at Arlington Unitarian Church and Path Forward preparing and serving food for the homeless, and at Goodwin House Hospice visiting and cheering up patients, where she was later blessed to receive outstanding care at the end of her cancer journey.
Kathy's love of music was always present: she sang in a choir that performed in the Sydney Opera House, was a seat filler at the AMA in LA, and listened to her favorite songs all day and night. Kathy also loved to scrapbook and enjoyed time on her balcony watching sunrises and sunsets.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Sidney and Jean Cooper, and brother Dennis. She is survived by her children Sydney Jean and Christopher Ross; her Australian siblings Lorraine Dwyer, Sue Staniforth, and Gale Milic; her American mother-in-law Mary Clare Kane; four siblings-in-law; and a large, loving network of 22 nieces and nephews and 23 great-nieces and nephews across Australia and the United States.
Kathy’s family is grateful for her preschool and church communities who supported Kathy through her cancer journey. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Goodwin House, Friends of Green Springs Gardens Historical Site or Central United Methodist Church.
