Marie Agnes Kunec

Marie was born in Hudson, Pennsylvania. She was the youngest of four children born to Andrew and Mary (Kochuba) Loferski. She attended Saint Joseph's Roman Catholic elementary school and later, Plains Memorial High School.

Marie married her sweetheart, Edward Joseph Kunec, in 1953. The couple moved to Washington, DC where Marie was active in the Jefferson Village Women's Club and at Saint James School during her children's school years. After Marie and her husband lost their oldest son in a tragic hit and run accident caused by a drunk driver, they founded the Washington DC metro area chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) and were recognized as Washingtonians of the year in 1983. Marie coordinated court monitoring for the organization and published the monthly newsletter for over ten years.

Marie had many talents and interests throughout her long life. She was an expert seamstress and gardener and passed her love for those hobbies to her children. Her baking skills were legendary, and her home was filled with the aromas of holiday treats for every occasion. Her nieces and nephews remember her for the welcoming atmosphere she always offered and her attention to detail when she hosted extended family at home. She loved the beach and spent many family vacations there over the years. She suffered a debilitating stroke in 2016, but this did not affect her love for family and zest for life. She became an avid reader and devoted her time to art.

Marie was predeceased by her husband Edward Joseph Kunec, her son Edward Jude Kunec, her siblings, and her son-in-law Glenn Amos. She is survived by her son David; her daughters, Alice (Amos), Joan (Threlfall) and her husband Mark Babyak, and Nancy (Ale) and her husband Bill; three grandchildren Helen, Edward, and Willa; and two great-grandchildren Maria and Anthony.

Marie was resilient, brave, and strong and she will be deeply missed.

Visitation will be at Murphy Funeral Home, 1102 W Broad St, Falls Church on Friday, August 21 from 4-8 pm. A Mass of Christian burial will be held Saturday, August 22 at St. James Catholic Church, 905 Park Ave, Falls Church at 10:00 AM.. Burial will be held at Fairfax Memorial Park at a later date.
