She was predeceased by her sister Catherine M. Brodnan (David) of Long Grove, IL, and brother Michael J. Kelley of Alexandria, VA. She is survived by son John Harman of Lewisburg, West Virginia (Sean Harman), and daughter Sharon Blassic (Max) of Glen Allen, Virginia (Brendan, Chloe, and Quinton Billy). She also leaves behind her beloved brothers Thomas F. Kelley (Phyllis) of Falls Church, VA and Joseph P. Kelley (Linda) of Fairfax, VA.
Born October 1, 1942 in Washington DC to Maurice and Margaret (Farquhar) Kelley, Mary spent most of her life in northern Virginia. A lifelong learner, she graduated summa cum laude from Wheeling Jesuit College, earned a master’s degree in English from Marshall University, and later a Juris Doctor from William & Mary. Her professional career spanned 45 years, including editorial roles with several government contractors, and culminating in her role as a Training Coordinator for Federal Judges at the Federal Judicial Center, where she retired in 2006.
Mary was admired for her accomplishments and for her sharp mind and keen wit. She brought insight, levity, and intelligence to every conversation, and had a unique gift for seeing and sharing the humor in life. She was an avid lover of the arts, especially chamber music, portraiture, and literature. Some of her greatest joys over the years were visits, often shared with her children and grandchildren, to the National Portrait Gallery and National Gallery of Art, where she found beauty, and inspiration.
In addition to her intellectual and artistic passions, Mary was a generous host who delighted in family holidays and birthdays. She was a talented cook who took great pride in making meals that brought people together and made every gathering special. Her warmth and lively spirit made her unforgettable. Even in her later years at the care facility, she formed close bonds with staff, nurses, and aides—so much so that she never needed to press her call button; people simply wanted to be with her.
Mary will be remembered for her brilliant mind, loving heart, and the joy she sparked in those lucky enough to know her.
Funeral services have been arranged by Murphy’s Funeral Home in Falls Church VA, with a Catholic Funeral Mass to be held on July 12, 2025, at 11:00 am at St. John the Beloved Church in McLean, VA, followed by interment at National Memorial Park in Fairfax, VA.
