Mary Shumaker of Fairfax has gone home to be with the Lord. She was 92, and, in her words, she had “a good, long life—a good husband, a good family, good friends.” She loved visiting those dear to her, and she was always eager to pack her bags and go. She was a gospel music groupie and took road trips to concerts, often joining old friends or relatives. In her younger years, she went to Hawaii three times and made numerous trips to the West Coast, the Southwest, the Midwest, and everywhere in between, with extended stays with family in North Carolina and at the Jersey Shore. She lived her faith quietly, saying she hoped others would see the Lord in her. It seems they did: “I’ve never known a kinder, sweeter person,” “a true Christian, loving and being loved by everyone around her,” “a kind and wonderful lady.”
She joins her husband, Thomas Shumaker, who passed on in 2005.
A reception will follow the memorial service.
Donations may be made in Mary’s memory to Capital Caring of Falls Church, in honor of the endlessly compassionate hospice care they provided, helping to ease Mary’s last days
