Born in Falls Church, Virginia, on May 20, 1971, Matthew lived his entire life in the loving care and company of his parents, Robert and Nancy Evinger. Surrounded by family, friends, and a supportive community, Matthew’s life was marked by simple joys, strong family connections, and enduring interests.
He was a devoted fan of the Washington Redskins, faithfully following his beloved team throughout his life and never met a piece of memorabilia he didn’t appreciate. Matthew was also an avid country music enthusiast, especially enjoying the classic sounds of the 1970s and 1980s. Among his favorite performers were Dolly Parton, Kenny Rogers, The Statler Brothers, The Oak Ridge Boys, and The Mandrells. He often expressed his appreciation for country music through his personal style, frequently wearing cowboy hats, Wrangler jeans, and western shirts.
Matthew participated in Special Olympics swimming and took great pride in his accomplishments in the pool. He also enjoyed spending Sunday afternoons with friends and fellow bowlers in his bowling league.
A graduate of the Davis Center at Marshall High School, Matthew took pride in his work with a janitorial crew providing services to local hotels. He was well regarded by hotel staff and occasionally received small tokens of appreciation from those he worked with.
Family remained especially important to Matthew throughout his life. Even as time passed and gatherings were less frequent, he kept his extended family close in his thoughts and was known for asking after their well-being whenever the opportunity arose. Photographs of his extended family were displayed throughout his room, reflecting the importance of those relationships to him.
Matthew is survived by his loving parents, Robert and Nancy Evinger; his brother, Patrick Evinger; and many extended family members, friends, caregivers, and acquaintances whose lives were touched by his kindness and warmth.
A celebration of Matthew’s life will be held on Friday, June 19, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Christ-Crossman United Methodist Church, 384 N. Washington Street, Falls Church, Virginia, where Matthew and his family were lifelong members.
Burial will take place at a later date at Oakwood Cemetery, where Matthew will be laid to rest in the family plot.
Matthew will be remembered for his warm and affectionate nature, as well as his ability to brighten any room he entered. He was known for his mischievous smile, and he never met a stranger, greeting family members, friends, caregivers, and acquaintances with genuine warmth. Always eager to share a hug or friendly greeting, he had a gift for making others feel welcomed, valued, and appreciated. His smile and gentle spirit left a lasting impression on all who knew him.
