

Max is survived by his wife of almost 62 years, Joanne Stowell Moffett, his children Bobbi (Donnie) Nicholls, Mark (Laura) Moffett and Scott (Renee) Moffett, his grandchildren Laura (Troy) Corbin, Justin Nicholls, Danielle Moffett, Kylee Moffett, Kendall Moffett, Nikki Sabol, Kyle Tufts, and his great-grandson Troy Corbin, Jr. He is also survived by his brother-in-law Fred (Glenda) Stowell, sister-in-law Judy Workman, sister-in-law Gayle Bickerstaff, sister-in-law Sandy Stowell, sister-in-law Terri Stowell, and brother-in-law Barry Stowell, in addition to numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, John and Bertha Blaine Moffitt, and his siblings Grace Dickerson, Don Moffitt, Floyd Moffett, Ruth Baumann, Mary Hitt and Robert Moffitt.
While in the military, Max and his brother Floyd's last name was misspelled and they decided to keep it that way.
Max served in the Korean War. After getting out of the service, Max began driving streetcars in Washington, D.C., which became obsolete, after which he began driving buses for DC Transit (renamed Metro), before becoming one of the first original subway operators for Metro (WMATA). He retired as a supervisor of start-up for the Metro subway system in 1986.
A visitation for Max will be held Saturday, December 11, 2021 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at National Funeral Home, 7482 Lee Highway, Falls Church, VA 22042, followed by a memorial service from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM. A private interment will be held at Arlington National Cemetery at a future date.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to St. Jude's or to the Clyde Barker Transplant House in Philadelphia, PA.
