Mel was born Tangiers, Morocco to Josue and Gimol Pinto on September 9, 1923. He married Barbara Hartling on December 3, 1964.
Mel founded Mel Pinto Imports, being one the first to introduce European racing bicycles to the American market. He was well known globally in the bicycle community. He was a founding member of the Federation of Washington Area Bicycle Clubs. Mel revived the National Capital Open bicycle race on the Ellipse in Washington, DC, sponsoring the race for 25 years.
Mel is survived by his wife Barbara, daughter Nadine and son Dirk.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 am Wednesday, March 31 at King David Memorial Garden.
