It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our Oscar "Jake" William Edwards, who departed this life on Friday, April 24th, at Inova Fairfax Hospital following a very hard battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife Linda Edwards, daughter Tammy Edwards Long, daughter Amy (Andrew), grandchildren, brothers Leon (Marantha), Michael (Debbie), Daniel, and nieces Samanta, Danielle, Noel, Alyssa, Matthew, and Ethan. He is preceded in death by Annie and Leroy "Coolie" Edwards of Middleburg, Virginia, as well as his previous wife, Carol Edwards.
Jake was born on January 29, 1948, in Winchester. He grew up and started making his huge and colorful impression in Middleburg, VA, where he attended Middleburg elementary and graduated from Loudoun County High School in 1968.
After being drafted into the Army, Jake served in Vietnam from 1968 into 1969. When he returned home, he was employed in construction, and then with a government contractor at the George Bush Center for Intelligence, in McLean, VA.
Jake was known far & wide across Virginia for his skill and competitive spirit on the ballfield...both baseball and softball. He was part of the 1984 ASA Men's Softball VA State Championship team--the only men's softball team from Loudoun County to win the championship. He was also a professional duckpin bowler, alongside his wife, Linda. No doubt, Jake gave his opponents on the lanes just as much trouble as he did on the basepaths.
Jake was also an avid & dedicated Redskins fan. He was a longtime season ticket holder, and as part of a family tradition he attended every home game played at RFK stadium. Jake and his 2nd wife, Linda, even travelled to games at Dallas to root on their beloved 'Skins against the despicable Cowboys. He loved the Orioles and Nationals, as well.
Jake was a big man, and a big voice; with a great big smile and greeting whenever he saw you. He was a resounding & strapping presence everywhere he went. It's hard to believe Jake's gone, but his memory and spirit will live on just as large as he ever.
