

On September 4th, 2026, Ralph B. Mason, Jr. died at the age of 95. Ralph was the younger son of Dr. Ralph B. Mason, Sr. and Francis Link and grew up in New Kensington, Pennsylvania. He studied physics at Gettysburg College and meteorology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Ralph served as a meteorologist for both the United States Air Force and the National Weather Bureau and then as an operations research analyst with the Defense Communications Agency and the Defense Information Systems Agency. An author on more than 25 papers relating to the effects of weather and nuclear weapons, Ralph retired in 1993 after 42 years of Federal service. He was a member of the American Meteorological Society and the American Geophysical Union.
Ralph is survived by his son, R. Bryant Mason III of Seattle. His wife Joan preceded him in 2012 and his younger son, Andrew J. Mason, died in 2020. Burial with wife Joan and son Andrew will be held in Cunningham, Kansas at a later date.
