Raymond Donald Harris (Donnie), dedicated husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather passed away peacefully at his home in Falls Church, Virginia at the age of 87 Sunday, June 1st 2025.
Born in Coeburn, Virginia, a small coal mining town, he later moved to northern Virginia with his wife and two children, residing in Falls Church for over 50 years.
Raymond’s career entailed working in the Virginia coal mines early on and later becoming a master sheet metal mechanic until retirement. He held many other self-taught skills such as carpentry, plumbing, general construction and gardening. He was well known for his produce grown in the back yard and would provide vegetables to all visitors. Raymond was greatly respected by his peers and neighbors and mentored numerous of his children’s and grandchildren’s friends.
Raymond’s passion was the outdoors with hunting and fishing. He shared his hobbies with his son Jeff and grandson Michael, including them very young and teaching them invaluable life lessons only time in the woods and a noble mentor can offer. Raymond also coached many of his son’s friends with these adventures ensuring they grew into gracious sportsman. He thrived on the comradery in hunting camp, the stories around a campfire while respecting nature and the game harvested.
Raymond is survived by his two children, Teresa and Jeffrey Harris. Also survived by four grandchildren, Michael Eckert, Christy Eckert, Shena Varvaro and Brittney Harris. Additionally, eight great grandchildren Tyler Eckert, Colton and Carter Hellems, Cash and Wesley Varvaro, Kane, Bennett and Konner Kummerfeldt. Raymond was predeceased by his wife of over 60 years Selma June Harris, his parents’ Arnold and Hazel Harris, siblings Carl, Bruce, Delbert, Margorie Harris and Barbara Bright. Raymond leaves behind his youngest brother Roger Harris.
Raymond was a great man and humanitarian, believing in family values and helping anyone in need. He is now resting in peace with the lord and reunited with his wife June.
