He was born on November 7, 1933, in Akron, OH to Richard Leo and Genevieve Qualters. Dick attended St. Vincent-St. Mary High School, and graduated from Borromeo Seminary in Wickliffe, OH in 1956. He served as a missionary for over four years supporting the Diocese of Cleveland’s mission in El Salvador, a special place where he met his wife, Janet. Dick and Janet married in 1974, and moved to the Washington, DC area. Over the next 10 years, they welcomed four sons, and have called St. James Catholic Church, in Falls Church, VA, home for over 40 years. He worked for nearly 20 years as an investigator for the U.S. Department of Interior before his retirement in 1994. Dick, an avid outdoorsman, taught his family to embrace his life-long passion of camping, backpacking, and adventure. An Eagle Scout himself, he was a passionate supporter of scouting, serving as an assistant scoutmaster and treasurer for Troop 681 in Falls Church for over a decade with his sons following him as Eagle Scouts themselves. Visitation will be held at Murphy Funeral Home in Falls Church, VA on Thursday, September 27 from 5:00-7:00 PM. A funeral is scheduled for Friday, September 28 at 10:00 AM at St. James Catholic Church, 905 Park Ave. in Falls Church. Interment to follow at Fairfax Memorial Cemetery, 9900 Braddock Rd., Fairfax, VA. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Dick’s life.
