Sunrise October 16, 1931 and Sunset July 23, 2023
I met mom in the Spring of 1976, when my best friend, Cidney introduce me to my new family, the Jenkins; Mom Rosa and brothers Darryl and Greg. Mom and I both have birthdays in October so we had very much in common as friends. 
Around this time, I thought my fate was doomed, abandoned with a 5 month old daughter which brought me to Virginia. We had many straight talks, and Mom became my role model as a single parent. She modeled her life with dignity and morality which essentially influenced me. It was a blessing for my daughter Shakira and I to have an extended family, in Virginia and lucky to have New York as a common denominator for all of us. 
Most significant about Rosa was she was an ambitious go getter, and had a knack for financial genius; yet she was frugal and an economical spendthrift. I admired her tenacity and self-sufficiency. She was an award-winning, Black woman pioneer, in the area of Real Estate sales; alongside her federal employment career at the Pentagon. 
Among her many other talents she was an artistic seamstress who made beautiful clothes, who was great at refurbishing furniture, and also a re-upholstery designer. There was always something aromatic cooking on the stove and we shared many meals together in her kitchen, over the last 48 years.
Thru Rosa Jenkins, I learned what a single women’s role was supposed to be. I was grateful to discern that the road ahead was not ill-fated but a tremendous journey, that I could manage alone as a single parent, as she had done.
No day will go by that you are not in my heart, Rosa Jenkins. You will remain in thoughts and prayers. Your legacy lives on in all of us. Continue to rest in God’s loving peaceful arms with our beautiful family in heaven…until we meet again.

I will always remember the visits we made to see Mrs. Jenkins whenever we were traveling from NY to different parts of the South. 

Ms. Jenkins, was like a second mother to me.  I will miss her dearly.



No day will go by that you are not in my heart, Rosa Jenkins. You will remain in thoughts and prayers. Her legacy lives on in all of us. Continue to rest in God’s loving peaceful arms with our beautiful family…until we meet again.

A Mother’s Crown

Heaven lit up with a mighty presence,
as the Angels all looked down.
Today the Lord was placing the jewels
Into my mother’s crown.

He held up a golden crown,
as my darling mother looked on.
He said in His gentle voice,
‘I will now explain each one.’

‘The first gem,’ He said, ‘is a Ruby,
and it’s for endurance alone,
for all the nights you waited up
for your children to come home.’

‘For all the nights by their bedside,
you stayed till the fever went down.
For nursing every little wound,
I add this ruby to your crown.’

‘An emerald, I’ll place by the ruby,
for leading your child in the right way.
For teaching them the lessons,
That made them who they are today.’

‘For always being right there,
through all life’s important events.
I give you a sapphire stone,
for the time and love you spent.’

‘For untying the strings that held them,
when they grew up and left home.
I give you this one for courage.’
Then the Lord added a garnet stone.

‘I’ll place a stone of amethyst,’ He said.
‘For all the times you spent on your knees,
when you asked if I’d take care of your children,
and then for having faith in Me.’

‘I have a pearl for every little sacrifice
that you made without them knowing.
For all the times you went without,
to keep them happy, healthy and growing.’

‘And last of all I have a diamond,
the greatest one of all,
for sharing unconditional love
whether they were big or small.’

‘It was your love that helped them grow
Feeling safe and happy and proud
A love so strong and pure
It could shift the darkest cloud.’

After the Lord placed the last jewel in,
He said, ‘Your crown is now complete,
You’ve earned your place in Heaven
With your children at your feet.’
