Obituary of Sally S Alne
Sally Stack Alne, born August 22, 1925, in Rockford, Illinois to Army Colonel Frank Thornton Addington and Jean (St. John) McLean Addington, died on August 5, 2019. She is survived by husband, Leonard Alne, sister Patricia Addington Powers, niece and nephews Sally, Keith and John Powers and their families. Sally and her family traveled with her father to his military assignments in the US and Puerto Rico before she finished the last of five high schools in Toccoa, Georgia, in 1943. Sally graduated from Duke with a B.A. in Education in 1947. After six years teaching primary grades in Arlington County, she married George Stack, a patent lawyer, in October 1953. He died a few months later. Sally then taught American children for two years in Japan and one year in Germany. She returned to teach primary grades in Arlington County for five years as an art teacher. In August 1965, Sally married Leonard A. Alne; he adopted the name David. They moved from the River House to Lake Barcroft, Falls Church, Virginia, where they lived 43 years. When David retired from the Pentagon in 1973, they made several tourist trips to Alaska, Australia/New Zealand, Greece/Turkey, Paris/London and trips to visit family members in Maine every summer. With her friend Shirley McOsker, Sally revisited Japan in October 1995. In December 2011, Sally and David moved to Goodwin House, a retirement facility in Falls Church, VA. Sally has long been interested in drawing and sketching. Her first study of oil painting was with the YWCA in Washington and with the Corcoran's summer classes. She studied drawing and painting at NOVA, Virginia and painting with the artists, Charlotte Robinson and Danny Dawson, at the Torpedo Factory. She studied watercolor for many years with Carolyn Garecki. For three years, Sally attended Skip Lawrence's group watercolor classes in Arlington County. Her artwork demonstrates her skill as an accomplished water colorist. Sally will be remembered by her family as full of fun with many life-long friends. In addition to her artistic accomplishments, she was a wonderful hostess who, with David, had many gatherings in their Lake Barcroft home. In the summer, she enjoyed entertaining on the party boat at Lake Barcroft and in the winter, skating. Her Maine family particularly appreciated her many knowledgeable tours of the Washington, D.C. area. Friends and family will gather for a memorial and celebration of Sally's life on September 26, 2019 at 11 a.m. at Goodwin House, 3440 S Jefferson St, Falls Church, VA 22041. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The Program in Education and mailed to: The Program in Education In memory of Sally Addington Alne Duke University Box 90739 Durham, NC 27708
