Shirley Learoy Graham was born on October 24, 1932 in Washington, DC to the late Theodore and Ruby Walters. Affectionately known as “Bobbie” to her family, she grew up in Northeast Washington, DC and attended DC Public Schools.
She met and married Samuel Graham of Saluda, South Carolina and they settled in the High View Park neighborhood of Arlington, Virginia. The two had a long and loving marriage lasting over 70 years until Samuel’s passing in 2020. To their union were born two sons, Samuel Curtis Graham and Steven Leroy Graham.
A woman of faith, Shirley was a prayer warrior and for many years was an active member of First Baptist Church, where she sang in the church choir. Her strong faith was reflected in her quiet strength and the kindness and compassion that she extended to others.
During her working years, she enjoyed her position at Herbert’s Department Store selling children’s clothing. She later worked as a shuttle bus driver for a retirement center. Her most cherished position, however, was that of homemaker. She prided herself in maintaining an immaculate home. She loved being with her family and enjoyed family gatherings. She was an excellent cook, having learned southern-style cooking from her sister-in-law as a young bride. Her hobbies included sewing, gardening and watching cowboy movies.
Shirley L. Graham was called to her Heavenly home on April 24, 2026. She is survived by her devoted and loving son, Steven Graham; three cherished granddaughters: Lisa Johnson, Angela Davis, and Caila Graham; five great-grandchildren; eight great-great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel Graham; her son, Samuel Curtis Graham; her parents, Theodore and Ruby Walters; and her sister, Virgia Walters.
Although she will be deeply missed, Shirley’s love, light and legacy will live on in all who knew and loved her.
