Shirley was a terrific mother-in-law and friend.  She was accepting of me from the start.  She would stick up for me, even against her own son!   She always made you feel like you were her favorite.  What were these stories about “monster-in-laws”?  I couldn't relate.
When I first came on the scene, over 30 years ago, She and I bonded immediately.  Some of my earliest favorite memories were her house parties. I couldn't believe how cool my mother-in-law was!  One night, a few of us were gathered in her living room playing “Indian Poker” while she was out.  (this took place after a few drinks…)  She walked in the door, smiled, sat down on the floor with us, and proceeded to stick cards on her forehead!  
She was extremely generous and had a huge heart.  Anything she had, you were welcomed to it. Her home was open to all, and she was a surrogate mother to many over the years.  
I loved watching her watch football!  I was so happy for her when she got the opportunity to attend the Super Bowl and root for her beloved Redskins.
I always looked forward to spending Mother's Day with her and the whole family.  She really took pride in her boys and their families.  Especially her grandchildren!  This was her day to soak it all up. 
And Christmas?!   What an event!  Her face lit up more than the kids when they opened their gifts!  (which were always too many!)  The adults could always count on receiving the latest and greatest products from the info-mercials!  Some were pretty cool, some…not so much!  ?  One thing was for sure on Christmas…you better save room for a piece of angel food cake, which she always made for her Christmas-born son, Alan.  Where did she find the time?!  Our personalized stockings were hung across the cabinets, and filled with thoughtful tokens.
She also could grow a mean African Violet!  Her window sill was filled with beautiful blooms.  And my heart is filled with beautiful memories.

Shirley was the best mother-in-law and friend one could hope for. She was always there when I needed her most. Rest in peace, you will never be forgotten!
