

Stella was born in Manila, Philippines on August 3, 1936. She earned her degree in Sociology from the University of the Philippines, and emigrated to the United States in 1960. She began her career at the World Bank in Washington, D.C., retiring as an Operations Analyst after 30 years of service. Her generosity and love of travel were reflected in her commitment to her work in international development.
Stella was preceded in death by her parents, Jose and Mercedes Pajares Umali, her husband of 33 years, James E. Uelmen, and her brother, Jose Umali Jr.
She is survived by her daughters, Pat Uelmen Huey (Greg) and Pilar M. Uelmen (Kenny Hanes); her sisters Cecilia Crisostomo, Violeta Villacorte, and Maria Luisa Ylagan (Efren); her brother Vicente Umali (Linda), five grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Chit’s family gratefully acknowledges the many expressions of support and condolence offered by friends, coworkers, and extended family. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Literacy Council of Northern Virginia are welcomed.
A committal service followed by inurnment at Arlington National Cemetery is planned, with the date to be announced when available. Arrangements are provided by National Funeral Home in Falls Church.
