

Verinder Kumar, husband, father and grandfather, passed away peacefully on July 2, 2022 in Vienna, Virginia, surrounded by his loving family and friends. Verin, son of Beshashar Nath Mahajan and Durga Devi of Mirpur in pre-partition India, was born on September 24.
He was predeceased by his parents and multiple siblings who were lost during partition, as well as two brothers who survived into adulthood: Pran Nath Gupta and Subhash Chandra. He is survived by his elder sister-in-law, Kamla Rani Gupta, cousin Santosh Gupta, wife, Manjula Kumar, his daughters, Monisha Longacre and Ayesha Flaherty, his sons-in-law, Keith Longacre and David Flaherty and his grandchildren, Maya Longacre, Jayson Longacre, Lucas Flaherty, and Neal Flaherty.
After growing up in Jammu and New Delhi, he left India in 1962 to begin his adult life in London, England where he worked and studied at the London School of Economics and earned his Chartered Accountancy.
In 1965 he married Manjula Mehandru and they lived together in England for almost two decades before emigrating with their two daughters to the United States. Over the years he served as a comptroller and CFO for various businesses including Wilcoxon Construction where he spent 30 years.
Throughout his life, Verin had a passion for traveling whether exploring India, hitch-hiking throughout Europe and the Middle East or cruising all over the world. He thoroughly enjoyed family vacations and visiting his extended family and friends. Every stranger he met instantly became a friend. He was known for being a very kind, honest and generous man who was always seeking opportunities to help others. His nickname, Vir, means “brave” which is exactly how he lived his life.
A celebration of his life will be held on Monday, July 11, 2022, at 11:30 a.m. at National Funeral Home and Memorial Park, 7482 Lee Highway, Falls Church, VA 22042. Doors will open at 11:00 a.m. and a reception will follow from 1:00-3:00 p.m.
Contributions in honor of Verinder Kumar can be made to the International Rescue Committee that supports refugee families that have been suddenly displaced as his family was during the partition of India in 1947.
