Wenchi was born in Hunan, China on July 16, 1913 and she passed away in her sleep on February 4th, 2013 at the age of 99.
Five of her six children were at her bedside. Her oldest son, Pony and his family in Taiwan did not make it.
Wenchi was the oldest child in her family. Her father was a high ranking officer of the Chin Dynasty but he died in his thirties.
Wenchi and her four younger sisters were brought up by their mother and grandma. Her grandma was a very wise lady with a broad vision. She sent all of her five granddaughters to school to get a higher education so they would have a better future. During that time in China, most of the families couldn't even afford to send their sons to college much less their daughters.
Wenchi's family owned farm lands and rental properties. As a teenage girl, Wenchi took charge of the household income and expenses with her grandma. She also lead her siblings to the girl's boarding school and finished their high school and college education. Two of her younger sisters, Wenshiu, a university English professor and Wenquien died in China a few years ago in their eighties. The third sister, Wenhwa celebrated her 95th birthday last year. She lives in Vancouver, Canada during the summer and stays in Hong Kong for the rest of the year. She was a good runner when she was young and she's also an excellent ballroom dancer. She won the first place of the Vancouver senior ballroom dance contest when she was 90 years old. Wender was Wenchi's youngest and closest sister. She followed her oldest sister from China to Taiwan. She passed away on April 15, 2011 at age of 90. Her husband Chang Yi retired from Taiwan Postal Bureau. His book titled "The China Postal History" is very well known in the postal service world. He died last September at age of 95.
Wenchi's grandma refused to leave her hometown but ordered Wenchi to guide the whole family to a safe place when Japan invaded parts of China. Wenchi lead her mother and siblings to a government location. Wenchi loves music and plays the organ and flute very well. She found a music teacher's job at the local elementary school to support her family. That's how she met her husband, the school's principal. JuYu Feng was a nice looking and decent young man. He lost his parents when he was seven years old. He was brought up by his grandma too. He graduated from the athletic college and was a soccer player. During the war with Japan, JuYu was in charge of the Transportation Department, and provided transportation of military supplies throughout the Southwest Highway. It was a very dangerous task but he completed missions successfully and saved lots of refugees’ lives. Because of the great job JuYu had done, the government appointed him to be the first Railroad Manager of Ping Tung Station in Taiwan right after the victory of Japan War in 1945. Wenchi brought her mother, youngest sister Wender and their three children Lisa, Pony and Shirley from Shanghai, China to Ping Tung, Taiwan and rejoined her husband later that year. Due to JuYu's job, the family moved from the southeast city Ping Tung to Kaohsiung and finally settled down in Taipei, the biggest city in Taiwan.
Wenchi gave birth of three more children in Taiwan, Grace, May and Jason. Wenchi's mother lived happily with the family until she passed away at the age of seventy seven. She told everybody that she has never regretted that she didn't have a son because JuYu was better than a son to her.
Wenchi and JuYu came to the United States in May, 1980 but unfortunately her husband JuYu died suddenly of a heart attack on December 20, 1980. It was a shock to the family and all their friends and relatives. JuYu was so loved not just by his family and friends but also his co-workers. The day he retired from Taiwan Railroad Bureau, he was surprised by the long line of people who came from all over Taiwan just to say goodbye and wish him well.
Wenchi has four daughters, two sons, four grandsons, five granddaughters and three great granddaughters and two great grandsons.
She was a good granddaughter, daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandma and great grandma. She was an easy going, friendly and a happy person. She loves to sing. She used to be a good chef, all her children's friends loved to come to her house for her delicious food. She used to be a good Ma Jong player as you can tell by the way she plays poker and dominos at the Lewinsville Senior Day Care Center.
Wenchi will be missed by her family and friends.
