Obituary of Wheeler B Santmyer
Wheeler Bell Santmyer, known as “W.B.”, beloved father, grandfather, great grandfather, and friend, passed away on January 11th, 2024, just short of his 96th birthday. W.B was born on February 19th, 1928, to Leo and Della (Bell) Santmyer, and grew up in Arlington, Virginia. Joining the Marine Corps in 1945 at the age of 17, he served in the Far East in the final stages and aftermath of World War Two. He spoke little about this, and the loss of comrades-in-arms, until late in life. He was thanked in person for his service by President Truman. Returning to his native Virginia, he went into the construction industry. From modest beginnings, he built a substantial business as a builder and land developer. Over five decades, he built numerous residential properties, from single family homes to large apartment blocks, as well as hotels, offices and shopping centers, in Virginia and Hilton Head. He and his associates built much of McLean, where he lived. A sparkling conversationalist and raconteur, with a mischievous streak, W.B. loved people. He cherished old friends and made new ones easily. He struck up conversations with everyone he ran into. He gave generously to his church and charities such as Youth For Tomorrow. He embraced life to the full. Ever curious and adventurous, he traveled extensively and was active until his later years, playing a strong game of golf, and enjoying fishing, boating, and riding. Above all, W.B. was a man of deep faith and love of God, devoted to his family. He was married for over 70 years to the love of his life, Evelyn, who predeceased him in 2020. He is survived by his four children, Sharon Harroun Peirce (Bob), Kathy Day (David), Tina Santmyer and David Santmyer; five grandchildren, Jocelyn, Trey, Erin, Justice and Tim; and six great grandchildren. He will be greatly missed by all. The funeral will be held at the National Funeral Home, 7482 Lee Hwy, Falls Church, VA 22042, Saturday January 27th. 12 noon visitation, 1pm service, 2pm interment with military honors, and reception to follow. The service will also memorialize Evelyn Santmyer, who died during Covid-19, and may be viewed virtually via the funeral home website.
