Wilburn "Wil" Lee Moore, age 81, passed away Saturday, February 9, 2019 at Inova Fairfax Hospital. Wil was born August 4, 1937. He grew up in Fairfax, VA, where he enjoyed studying in school and playing basketball and baseball. His lifelong quest for knowledge led to his earning a high school diploma from Fairfax High School in 1955, a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering Mechanics from Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1961 and a Juris Doctor degree from Georgetown University in 1968. His initial collegiate experience was at Duke University, where he played on the freshmen basketball team. He passed the Virginia State Bar Exam in 1968. His career included stints as a member of a team designing hydrofoil boats for the Department of the Navy and in private law practice. His passions included spending time with family and friends, reading (his favorites included classic literature and books and essays on political philosophy, the law and history), Duke basketball and Washington Nationals baseball. A tireless work ethic enabled him to vigorously support and advocate for the causes in which he believed. Wil was a devout Christian and loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, son, uncle and friend. He was a very active member of Columbia Baptist Church in Falls Church, VA until he was unable to attend services regularly. He is survived by his three children Brent (Elizabeth) Moore; Priscilla Downey and Brad Moore; grandchildren Amy Downey, Michael Moore and Ellie Moore; sisters Merle Filipowski and Christina Davis; step-son Tim (Julie) Welter; step-grandchildren Amber, Ashley and Allison; and many nieces and nephews. Wil was preceded in death by his beloved wife Joyce Hull Moore; by his parents Ewell and Bertha Moore and by his brother Ewell.
