Dr. William F. Shaw, 98, died peacefully at home in McLean, VA on Sept. 21, 2018. William was born February 24, 1920. His quiet, witty and loving personality was evident to everyone he knew. He enjoyed gardening, relaxing on the deck, an evening Scotch cocktail and watching baseball. Born in Brooklyn, NY, William entered the U.S. Army in 1943, and served during World War II with the 22nd Field Artillery Brigade and the XII Corps Artillery Fire Direction centers in France, Luxembourg, Czechoslovakia, and Germany where he was decorated with the Bronze Star for Valor. He was also deployed with the 101st Airborne Division and the Free French Division for special operations. At the conclusion of the war, William served in the Army of Occupation in Regensburg, Germany. After his 1945 discharge from the Army in Paris, he worked as a civilian for the Dept. of the Army where he met Josephine C. Kerbey of Washington, DC, his wife of 54 years. William used the GI Bill to earn a degree in Economics and Government Policy at the University of Miami, FL and a Master's from George Washington University in Washington, DC. His doctoral studies in Economics and Statistics were carried out at Walden and George Washington Universities. He gave 70 years of service to the U.S. government, including the U.S. Army in WWII and 66 years at FHA/HUD as Chief Statistician. Later in his career, William earned the 1983 Federal Office Systems Professional of the Year Award. William was predeceased by his wife, Josephine. He is survived by son, William Frederick Shaw, Jr. of Roswell, GA, daughter, Teresa Anne Shaw of Falls Church, VA, three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. A funeral with military honors will occur on Thursday, June 6, 2019 11:00AM at Arlington National Cemetery. The service begins at the Old Post Chapel located at Ft. Myer (Joint-Base Myer-Henderson Hall). Please enter Ft. Myer at the Hatfield Gate; 2nd St. South, Arlington, VA. Family and friends to be seated at the Chapel by 10:45AM. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
