My Precious Yasi, Even though you lived far from the family and were so busy with your demanding job, you always assured your family that you loved them. The thought of losing you so suddenly and unjustifiably gives me such a fear and anger that I want to get up and run to the end of the world! Every moment I wish I could join you, because life is meaningless when you are taken from us and the rest of the world and I am still alive. The weight of losing you will never get lighter to carry, except that we have learned to endure it. The only thing that I can hold on to is the fact”YOU COULD LIVE YOUR LIFE YOUR WAY “

Yasmeen, I think of you everyday since hearing we lost you. We were only in each other’s lives for a short while, maybe 9 months or so, yet I will feel the heartbreak of losing you for many years to come. Although we spent most of our time together working as colleagues, we had a lot of fun and had such deep and meaningful conversations about our work in immigration and about life in general. When you first told us about your professional history, I thought to myself, “wow, what an amazing life she has led this far.” I had deep admiration of your adventures and knowledge and hung on to every word from your incredible stories about your travel around the world. I feel lucky to have been able to spend my most recent birthday with you in May where you hosted all of us at your awesome new place. I will miss your personality, compassion, intelligence and wisdom. You’ll be in my heart forever. 

Dearest Yasmeen was a fellow pilgrim on a retreat to Egypt. We stayed in touch and she visited us in Phoenix several times. It’s strange to know she has transitioned, yet we are comforted that she’s now in good hands. Peace be with you sister, we will light a candle for you and remember you fondly, love Majella and Ted xx

I had the pleasure of living next door to Yasmeen when she moved into the Parkfairfax neighborhood in VA. From the moment she arrived her bright light, smile, and energy were a welcome presence. I loved catching glimpses of her on an early morning walk with tea in her hand or lounging in a lawn chair in a bright spot of sun. Yasmeen was always willing to stop, chat, and share her infectious positive energy. Her presence and smile will be dearly missed in the neighborhood. A beautiful soul who left the earth a bit dimmer with her early departure . Sending love and prayers to her family and friends.

هنوز رفتنت رو باور نمیکنم.

اصولا رفتنی در کار نیست.آدمها همیشه در قلب و یاد کسانی که دوستشون دارن، باقی میمونن ...تا ابد.‌‌..


تو اولین و صمیمی ترین دوست بچگی من بودی. بهترین و شاد ترین روزهای بچگی ام رو با تو گذروندم .
چقدررر باهم بازی می کردیم.کتاب میخوندیم. آهنگ گوش میکردیم.
تو من رو با آهنگای گروه آبا و بانی ام و جرج مایکل آشنا کردی...

یادمه تو اولین نامه ای که بعد از رفتنت برام نوشتی،
نوشته بودی که تو یه رستوران چینی، یه (fortune cookie) خوردی و نوشته ی داخلش این بود:
life is a tragedy for those who feel and a comedy  for those who think...

بعد اون همه سال 
دوباره پیدات کردم. با اینکه هردومون تغییر کرده بودیم 
اما چقدررر حرف‌ها و ایده‌ها و سلیقه‌های مشترک داشتیم.انگار نه انگار که سی وخورده ای سال از هم دور بودیم...
تازه قرار بود تابستون بریم ترکیه 
یا یونان 
همدیگه رو ببینیم ....
با رفتنت 
بخش بزرگی از خاطرات من رو هم بردی ،
دیگه نه اون خونه های قدیمی هست،نه اون آدمهای دوست داشتنی ،
همه شون فقط در یاد و خاطره ی ما تا وقتی زنده هستیم ،باقی می مونن ...
به یاد تو 
این شعر فروغ رو (که خیلی دوستش دارم) می نویسم :

«آیا دوباره گیسوانم را در باد شانه خواهم زد؟
آیا دوباره باغچه ها را بنفشه خواهم کاشت؟
و شمعدانی ها را
در آسمان پشت پنجره خواهم گذاشت؟
آیا دوباره روی لیوان ها خواهم رقصید؟
آیا دوباره زنگ درمرا بسوی انتظار صدا خواهد برد؟

به مادرم گفتم :"دیگر تمام شد."
گفتم :"همیشه پیش از آنکه فکر کنی، اتفاق می افتد.

Yasi Jan, when some one asked me, how many brothers and sisters do you have? I always replied, there are eight of us. I have six sisters and one brother. The other day, I was asked the same question. How many brothers and sisters do you have? Without hesitation I replied the same answer. Then I paused for a moment and I realized that I needed to give a different answer, but I couldn’t. My answer remained the same. There are eight of us. I have six sisters and one brother. There will always be eight of us. Missing you

You and I were closest in age. You were my younger sister and I was your older brother. Life made us go through a lot together; share similar experiences, and more so than our other siblings. We went to the same school, moved from house to house, country to country, and continent to continent. We shared a lot of hopes, dreams, and fears. I am glad that we had a few weeks to spend together when you stayed with me 6 years ago, and we celebrated your birthday together. I kept encouraging you to persevere, and have faith that the light at the end of the tunnel was getting brighter for both of us. You were finally at peace with yourself in the past few years, and I am glad that at last you were enjoying the life that you had always wanted. I wish you could have enjoyed it a lot longer with the rest of us.  The day of your passing I had a vision of you and mom holding each other and smiling. Rest in peace. You will forever be in our hearts.

When someone is taken suddenly, you struggle to recall the conversations and the small details, the memories and thoughts shared. I remember meeting Yasmeen two years ago and connecting immediately. 

Our chatter was around everything from growing up to gun control. Things meant so much to this woman, family, humanity, and authenticity. Her empathic aura, the smell of Jasmine tea in tiny iron cups will remain with me, and I think she'd smile if she knew she humbled me. 

I'm so glad I can remember her enjoying horseback riding in the mountains on a chilly November day and our stopping to buy artisan chocolate on the drive home. 

But my favorite will be the morning just weeks ago in mid-May that we dragged a barbecue grill she'd found second hand in the neighborhood - uphill laughing and cursing across uneven sidewalks and muddy grass - to the terrace of the new home she adored. 

I'm grateful for the perfect spring evening in early June that we chatted for hours and broke in that grille with a perfect little feast, her favorite ambient music, unscripted conversation, leftover wine and a cigarette.  

She was so kind!!! She made me delicious tea several times. Was so grateful. I'm so sad. I tried to help her grab furniture from DC once. She was always trying to treat me. We grabbed Persian food the last time I saw her. We went to the local pizza restaurant too. We lived in the same neighborhood. She was easy going, grateful and kindness just emanated out of her. Huge loss. She just got back from traveling to Greece. Was thinking why I hadn't heard from her and then I got the call today. I'm sad I didn't reach out more. I'm glad I met such a beautiful spirit. Thanks for gracing me with your beauty inside and out.

My lovely beautiful Yassi, I miss you , a little too much, a little too often, and a little bit more. Our wonderful childhood moments are passing in front of my eyes like a movie frame and I always remember good old times with our kinda mischievous activities sometimes. Unfortunately we were so far away from each other after immigrating to different sides of the worlds and couldn’t meet up often. You became a great immigration lawyer and helped thousands of people around the world and always go above and beyond and ready to help people in their misery. I am still in shock how and why you left everyone behind too soon as the world needs kind hearted people like you. You will be always missed and I am not alone in my grief forever. R.I.P
