Anne T. Carter (nee Misek), 83, of Farmingdale, NY, passed away suddenly on Sunday, August 3, 2025. She was born on August 20, 1941 in New York, NY, to Evelyn T. Misek (nee Ludwig) and William F. Misek (both deceased).
Anne was the devoted wife of the late Anthony A. Carter (Tony), having married on August 3, 1964, until his death in 1994. She is survived by her daughters, Serena M. Brochu (William) of Farmingdale, NY, and Charity A. Carter (Michael Christoff) of Whippany, NJ. Anne is also survived by her siblings Eleanor F. Wall of Manalapan, NJ; Joseph W. Misek of Kresgeville, PA; and Evelyn T. Bankes of Highlands, NJ. She was pre-deceased by her sister, Carol J. Custer of Atlantic Highlands, NJ. Anne was a dear aunt and cousin to many.
Anne was a graduate of St. Jean Baptiste High School in Manhattan, where she was raised. After earning a NYS Regents’ Scholarship, she attended St. Catherine’s Nursing School in Brooklyn, NY, graduating in 1962, and was a Registered Nurse. She subsequently earned Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in addition to becoming a Certified Social Worker. Her nursing career started at Lenox Hill Hospital in Manhattan in the early 1960s and concluded at Winthrop University Hospital (now NYU Langone) in Mineola, NY in 2012. During a hiatus from nursing in the 1980s, she worked for the Greater NY Fund/United Way.
Throughout her life, Anne was an avid learner. She loved all things science - whether it related to medicine, astronomy, anthropology, or geology. Anne was a voracious reader and especially enjoyed the works of J.R.R. Tolkien. Her musical tastes were varied and ranged from classical to classic doo-wop to classic rock. She loved a good laugh especially British comedy. But she was also an avid viewer of both British and Scandinavian detective shows. At the time of her passing, Anne was also refreshing her knowledge of the French and German languages.
Anne enjoyed DIY projects and made good use of Home Depot gift cards to buy power tools. She took pride in her new-found abilities to use a chain saw, assemble furniture, and paint around the house. Anne loved taking trips to the local IKEA for both Scandinavian design inspiration and shopping for those items that you didn’t know you needed.
Anne’s family and Catholic education instilled in her a strong sense of faith. That faith was manifested in her treatment of everyone she encountered. Her love and faith extended to her patients, those in need, her beloved pets and all animals, her backyard wildlife friends, and the natural world.
To deepen her faith, she completed the program run by the Pastoral Formation Institute through the Diocese of Rockville Centre. At St. Catherine’s School of Nursing, she was educated by the Sisters of St. Dominic, and they have always held a special place in her heart. Anne became a Dominican Associate and participated in the prayer and mission of the Sisters of St. Dominic of Amityville, NY. She served as a Eucharistic Minister at Mass and sang with the choir. She admired the work and accomplishments of the Sisters and felt honored to be a part of their community. While affiliated with the Sisters in Amityville, she made many wonderful friends whose company she greatly enjoyed.
