Mary Elizabeth Bonnick was born on February 18, 1937, in the parish of St. Thomas, Jamaica, to Arthur and Elfreda Hamilton. Shortly after Mary and her twin sister Martha were born, their mother became ill and was hospitalized. Sadly, Elfreda passed away, leaving the newborn twins to be raised by their devoted father, Arthur, with the loving support of their older sister, Monica.
As a young woman, Mary moved to Kingston in search of better opportunities. She discovered and developed a remarkable talent for dressmaking, working for garment companies such as Davon and Arrow, which supplied clothing for the American market. Later, in Ensom City, Mary became known throughout the neighborhood as a gifted dressmaker. She created school uniforms, work attire, and beautiful custom pieces that were admired for their craftsmanship and style. Beyond sewing, Mary was also known for her talents in the kitchen as an excellent cook and baker.
Mary was the proud mother of four children: Desmond, Andrea, Chris, and Michael (Von). She was predeceased by her beloved son Chris and her husband Winston. In addition to raising her own children, Mary lovingly helped raise several of her older sister’s children and remained a devoted advocate and caring presence in the lives of her two stepdaughters, maintaining a close relationship with them throughout her life.
In 1986, Mary immigrated to the United States and brought her family with her to build a new life. She settled in Brooklyn, New York, where she worked in the healthcare field caring for the elderly, a role that reflected her naturally compassionate and nurturing spirit. Mary also expanded her baking talents by taking cake decorating courses, creating beautiful and delicious treats for family and friends.
Her home in Brooklyn became a warm gathering place where loved ones came together for holidays, celebrations, and special moments. Mary’s door was always open to anyone in need of a place to stay or a warm meal; generosity and kindness were simply part of who she was.
After the passing of her son Chris, Mary moved to Long Island to live with her son Von and his family, where she became a second mother to his children. Later, she relocated with them to Winter Park, Florida, where she resided for almost twenty years until her health began to decline. At that time, Mary moved in with her daughter Andrea, who lovingly cared for her until her needs required skilled care. She spent her final days in a memory care facility.
Mary will be remembered as an incredibly generous, loving, and resilient woman who devoted her life to caring for others. Her warmth, creativity, and unwavering support touched many lives.
She leaves to cherish her memory her children, Desmond, Von, and Andrea; her grandchildren, Sophia, Earnest, Taylor, Kasey, Stephan, and Mika; her great-grandchildren, Yania, Cole, Myles and Loreli; her great-great-grandchild Ace; as well as many nieces, nephews, and friends who mourn her loss and celebrate her life.
Her legacy of love, generosity, and devotion to family will live on in all who knew her.
