May 11, 1940 – October 13, 2026
Norma Angela (Liverpool) Haynes, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend, entered into eternal rest on October 13, 2026, at the age of 86. Born on May 11, 1940, in Guyana, South America she was a devoted mother whose life was a gift to all who knew her.
She is lovingly survived by her cherished children, Peggy Haynes; Ray (Enid) Haynes; Hugh (Maricela) Haynes; Holly (Carol Hibbert) Haynes; and Raul (Gilda) Haynes; 17 adored grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She will also be lovingly remembered by her extended family of sons and daughters, the friends of her children and the friends of her grandchildren, who all held a special place in her heart. She was predeceased by her eldest son, Earl Haynes; her parents, Denon and Vita Liverpool; and her grandmother, Ophelia Bath.
Norma believed a life is a seed you plant in other people, and she planted hers deep.
Life was not easy for her. She came out of Bartica, Guyana, with a firm instruction she lived by and passed on: learn, work hard, and do things the right way. She spent her working life as a healthcare professional caring for others. She brought her family to this country because she believed in a better opportunity for her children, and she believed in them so completely that she gave up much of herself to make it possible. Through all of it, she found her greatest joy in her children. She was selfless, generous and unshakable, and she poured everything she had into helping them succeed.
What she gave them lives on. Her belief in education, her insistence on being a good and kind person, and her example of hard work and doing things the right way became the foundation for each of their lives. Earl loved music and loved life. Peggy, Ray, Hugh, Holly and Raul each built lives of purpose in their own way, and each carries her in what they do and how they care for others. She cherished their success and was proud of the men and women they became.
Nowhere does her legacy shine more brightly than at the holidays. Norma produced them with love and care, and they were beautiful, spectacular and unforgettable. Her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren gathered around her table, and those gatherings remain among the family's most treasured memories. Every holiday her family celebrates together, now and for generations to come, carries her in it.
She loved traveling with her family and watching sports, and she took pride in everything being clean and proper. After moving to Flushing, Queens, she took up Tai Chi. She was a wonderful cook who taught each of her children to cook, and every meal they make carries her. In her later years, she devoted herself to the Catholic Church.
Norma wanted her passing to be a celebration of her life, and we believe she is in a better place.
