MAUDE ROSE BRUNSTETTER

Dr. Maude Phillips Brunstetter, an educator and historian, died May 26, 2017. She was 86. A graduate of Columbia University, Brunstetter taught political science and served as department chair-woman at West Virginia State College (now West Virginia State University). She was one of the original set of people who worked to see the New River Gorge National River became a reality in 1978. She lived many years of her life at the Altamont, a former hotel her family had owned that she had placed on the National Register of Historic Places. She was active in Democratic politics and the American Association of University Women. She earned a Phi Beta Kappa and attended the Fayetteville United Methodist Church. She is survived by her son Mark and daughter-in-law Debra, as well as special friends Susan Williams and David Hartung. She will also be missed by many friends and former students.
