Pet Spearen

January 29, 1927November 27, 2016

Pet Nutter Spearen left this earth early Sunday morning, November 27th, with her loving family by her side. Pet was born at home in Elk Ridge WV and graduated from Montgomery High School. She met her beloved Carl Edgar, married him at midnight, and eventually gave life to five vicarious children: Eddie Spearen, Pam Mullins, Susan Spearen, Barbee Sigman, and Gregg Spearen. While the family grew Pet and Carl opened a restaurant, produce market, car wash and other real estate endeavors, creating a small empire. Pet led her employees kindly yet sternly through servant leadership in her altruistic way. Eddie, Pam, Susan, Barbee and Gregg worked diligently alongside their mother and father while Pet and Carl built the business and the character of their children. The way she ran her household was also impeccable. She carried the duties of marriage and motherhood with style and grace. She was not shy about speaking her mind and opinions, however she spoke with class and would state the truth as any noblewoman would. When she and Carl retired in their 50’s and moved to Fayette County, they worked hand in hand to clear the land creating the Spearen family farm. Pet formed a homestead for Spearen family gatherings in hosting the nationally known “pick n parties” and the joining of many hands in marriage. All were welcome and all were treated like family. While her adult daughters discovered their passion and talent for writing and performing music, Pet cared for her grandchildren allowing the family musical legacy to continue. She did this for her husband, for her children and grandchildren, and she did this with humbleness and grace. She was Grammer and she thoroughly enjoyed the time she spent with her grandchildren. Even when they were wild. She was resolute that education and the musical tradition be present in the lives of her family members. Pet joined Carl in their new stage of life as retired musical snowbirds which began in a van and progressed to annual trips to Florida in their always “up and coming” motorhome. While in Florida, Pet and her true love, Carl Edgar, built lasting friendships over their many years becoming a part of this retired-musician community. Pet danced, biked, cooked, held her own at the card table, and sold anything Carl asked her to, all while dressed to the nines. After the death of her husband, the “belle of the ball” took center stage and showered her subjects with sweetness and blackberry cobbler. She modeled Jackie O in pink and pearls, and could rock a hat like you wouldn’t believe. Her cheeks were rosy and when you looked into her eyes, you knew what clever meant. Pet lived to the fullest by staying on the move. If someone had wheels and they were leaving, she was grabbing her hat and purse. She had a magnetic energy that drew people toward her. In her later years, her light shown bright and her mind, her sharp mind, never waned. She was the last of her family. Pet lived 89 hardworking, laughter-filled years. She enjoyed a good pizza and a good piece of chocolate. She lived with fervor. She was dear to our hearts and her legacy will live on. Indeed, she will be missed vastly by her great-great grandchildren, her grandchildren, and her five devoted children. All are welcome to attend the celebration of her life Thursday December 1st 2016. Viewing hours are 11-1 and the service will begin at 1pm. Services will be at the Spearen home place, 660 Cassidy Branch Road, Fayetteville. Night all. To all the family, you know how we feel and we send you all our love and support. She will never be totally gone while we have Eddie, Pam, Susan, Barbee and Gregg carrying on the legacy of family, music and friendship. We love you all.

I am so very sorry to hear of Pet's crossing over...I talked almost daily with her when I delivered the mail, and for 30 years, she always put a smile on my face before I left the mail for that day. I know she will be missed so badly, but she will always be in the hearts of so very many! God blessed you all for having her as your mom! May He give you peace in your time of sorrow......
