Sandra "Sandy" Jean Fitzwater

February 17, 1947January 18, 2021

Sandra “Sandy” Jean Fitzwater, 73, of Roanoke, VA, with her family surrounding her in comfort care, went to be with her Lord on Monday, January 18, 2021. She was preceded in death by both of her parents, Edward “Ed” and Estelle “Eckie” Avis; son, Matthew Fitzwater. Sandy was born on February 17, 1947 in Oak Hill, WV. She grew up in Fayetteville, WV with her family and graduated from Fayetteville High School in 1965. She was married the same year to Charles Fitzwater and they moved to Roanoke, VA in 1974.This became her home and is where she raised her family. Our mother was a loving and very caring person with a huge heart. She always thought of others, asking what she could do for them, before herself. She enjoyed cooking and then eating with family. She loved to laugh, especially with her sister Dorinda who was also her best friend, and oh my, did they ever laugh together! She also loved the holidays, class reunions, along with going on bus trips to plays with her friends and church group. She was an avid cat lover and always had them by her side. There was never a stray that she didn’t take in. Sandy always said, “Her greatest gift and accomplishment in life was her family”. She loved them all beyond belief. She was proud of her two sons, but most of all, her five granddaughters for becoming such amazing young women. Left to cherish her memory is her two sons, Charles Fitzwater II and wife Rossi, of Raleigh, NC; Jason Fitzwater of Roanoke, VA.; seven grandchildren, Hailey Fitzwater of Charlotte, NC; Kinsey Fitzwater of Charleston SC; Ben Plunkett, Ross Plunkett, Isabella Fitzwater, Caroline Fitzwater, Emma Fitzwater, all of Roanoke, VA.; brothers Edward 'Ed’ Avis and wife Linda, of Boston, NY; Richie Avis, and wife Ada, of Fayetteville, WV.; sister, Dorinda Fitzwater and husband Bill, of Fayetteville, WV.; numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. Special thanks to all of the people at Medi-Home Health care in Roanoke, VA for being so amazing to our mother Sandy. Thank you from all of us for caring for her.
