Amalia D’Arcangelo Contrado passed away peacefully from this earth on September 16th, 2021 at the age of 90, following a brief illness.
Born on May 27th, 1931 to Italian immigrants Giuseppe Liberato and Carmella (Scozzari) D’Arcangelo, Amy grew up in The North End of Boston amongst a large extended family. She established a strong foundation of values rooted in Catholic faith, hard work, love for family and a profound pride in her Italian heritage. At just 13 years of age, she met the love of her life, her husband of 72 years, Pasquale A Contrado. They were married October 16th, 1949 and started a family. With two children in tow, their desire to accomplish more for their family led Amy and Pat to Burlington, MA. It is there where they expanded their family, having two more children and happily residing for nearly 50 years.
Throughout the course of her life, Amy’s work ethic and determination led to many accomplishments both in and out of the work force. Despite societal norms of the time, she proved herself to be a strong woman, both fearless and gutsy. After graduating from Girl’s High in 1948, Amy began her career at the prestigious Slattery Department Store. Striving for more, she became Executive Assistant to the department Head of Hospital Maintenance at Massachusetts General Hospital. At the age of 60, Amy decided to return to school, earning an Associate’s Degree in Business. She then became a Human Resource Specialist at Mitre Corporation, where she finished her career as the Executive Assistant to Lead Engineer.
In addition to her success in the workplace, Amy’s strong Catholic faith guided her throughout life to continuously give back to the community and serve others. As a longtime parishioner of St. Margaret’s Church she regularly attended Mass, volunteered her time organizing the Holiday Bazaar and teaching CCD classes. With her husband by her side, Pat & Amy became instrumental in the success of the Marriage Program, where they were highly regarded as a loving, insightful couple.
Their faith in God and love for each other laid the foundation for Amy’s most important job, being a mom to their four children. Family was the center of Amy’s life and above all, her greatest accomplishment. She was so proud of her four children and their spouses, her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Together as a family, they spent many Sundays enjoying large gatherings on Glenn Ave with extended family. They took many family vacations to Old Orchard Beach where wonderful family memories were made. Throughout the years, they enjoyed camping, picnics and pool parties with family and many friends from the community and church.
Later in life, family trips were often to St. Augustine, FL where Amy and Pat retired and have lived for the past 30 years. Here she continued to have family and friends gathered together around her table. As a member of St. Anastasia Catholic Church, she attended daily mass and participated in all church events. Amy looked forward to selling her homemade Italian Pizzelles for the yearly Bazaar. Never one to forget her roots, they always continued their annual trek back to The North End for the Feast of St. Anthony. Celebrating the 100th anniversary of The Feast with the entire extended family will be a memory we all hold dear to our hearts.
Amalia Contrado will always be remembered as a role model and matriarch of our family. She had a genuine spirit that made everyone she met feel at ease, loved and special. Her values, faith and love for family will be carried in our hearts forever.
“Be kind, generous, warm and loving to all that you meet and live your faith. This will sustain you and make you a better man or woman.
People will see and feel your kindness and goodness.”
