Art was born on February 7, 1934, in the Bronx. NY to Arthur H. Dycke and Katherine Kleinert.
Art attended Cardinal Hayes High School and received his Bachelor’s degree at Hunter College and obtained his Master’s degree from Columbia University in New York City. He was a high school and college history and government teacher and taught for more than 45 years. He loved teaching, and his students loved him back.
Art also shared his love of skiing with generations of young people. In addition to teaching, he ran a weekend ski business and taught more than 1,000 children how to ski.
Art met the love of his life, Louise Roy, when he was 28 years old. He was working as a ski instructor running weekend bus trips. Louise had taken a trip to learn to ski, and Art fell in love when he heard her sing on the ski bus. They were married on November 17, 1962, in Manchester, New Hampshire. Louise, who was then working in New York City as a public health nurse, became his partner in every adventure that followed. They were married for 63 ½ years.
Art and Louise raised their family in Ossining, New York. They were the proud parents of three daughters.
In 1993, Art and Louise “retired” and moved to Palm Coast, Florida.
In Palm Coast, Art built another full and meaningful chapter of his life. He taught Economics and American History at Daytona Community College for about 15 years. He worked to establish the Palm Coast Historical Society. He was appointed Historian of Palm Coast and served the history society for 20 years. He published two books, A History of Palm Coast and a biography of Alan Smolen.
Art was named Palm Coast Citizen of the Year in 2018. He was also the Grand Marshal of the Palm Coast Christmas Parade in 2013.
Arthur is survived by his beloved wife of 63 ½ years, Louise Dycke; his three daughters, Kelley Lau (Bob), Christine Stapleton, and Jackie Norris (John); his six grandchildren, Lauren Wong (Will), Jake and Abbey Lau, Hunter, Cole, and Sam Norris; and his three great-grandchildren, Edith, Esme, and Damian Wong. He was also a beloved uncle to Celeste, Elise, Monique, Marc, and Renee.
Even in Art’s later years, when his memory failed him, he was kind and loving.
We hope you will remember his love of history and encourage people to visit and support the Palm Coast Historical Society. We are eternally grateful to the volunteers of the Grand Haven Family Fund for enriching his life. Both organizations were near and dear to his heart.
The family plans to hold a Mass of Remembrance at Santa Maria del Mar’s church in Flagler Beach followed by a Celebration of Life. Details will be announced in the near future.
